Here's what I usually do:

Upload the attachment to your post (don't submit your post yet). Look at the thumbnail - if it looks sideways, delete the attachment and do the following:

Open your image in Windows Paint, and then immediately save it without making any changes.

Then upload the attachment again. It should now be in a correct orientation.

Or you can just change the gravitational constant of the universe by 90 degrees. Whatever is easiest.
