SunnyFl
I turned on wx-radio on in time to hear an announcement about "protect pets and sensitive plants...." and lows in the 40s and "thirties inland." Windchill Advisory issued - windchills in the 30's - for Pinellas! - early Monday. ARE WE OVER THIS YET?? This morning, it felt like a January morning. Then it got colder and the wind got worse.... ...and I recall last November we were complaining about how it felt like January. This is pretty d*** long January, wouldn'tcha say? Tonight we will be using the heater. This is the first March since 1993 that we have needed to use the heat (and couldn't use it back then b/c the storm had knocked the power out.) edited to add: Freeze Watch now in effect for Citrus, Hernando, Pasco for a "widespread and damaging freeze event." It blew a gale today from the south. Tomorrow up to 27C then getting hotter rapidly with 21C min 37C max by Monday. Tyrone Tyrone, I noticed that Perth got down to 6-7C last night! And Jandakot was 4C!!! (39F) That's like a mid winter night! What's with the huge temp fluctuations? Is it caused by cool dry air? Does it affect your palms? Tyrone
I never saw below 11C and in Jandakot you can't even grow Golden Canes or foxtails. Jandakot is a freak when it comes to weather. My palms haven't even battered an eyelid. What happened is we had very strong southerlies all day drawing up cold air from below 50S, and then the pressure built up and the high sat over us all night, so the winds dropped to nothing and so did the temp. Still the ground temp is what matters and that hasn't dropped much as the ground absorbs a lot of heat during the day and re-radiates it at night. In March we may get a cold blip like that before the temps race up again and it's all to do with the positioning of the high pressure zone. We're back to 18,19C min by the weekend which is more normal, and low to mid thirties. Also with this cold period the air dried out very rapidly due to the high pressure, and that makes all the difference. If we were more humid and cloudy in summer those sort of cold periods wouldn't happen. Our winter temps are more stable than our summer temps due to the increased humidity. With last nights cold snap all I noticed was I was under the covers a bit more than usual lately. Definitely not heater weather yet. Those cold temps would have existed only in the open like at an airport ( both Perth airport and Jandakot take there readings from the respective airports) for maybe less than an hour, and any canopy would have sealed the warmth in easily. It's a funny place over here. Best regards Tyrone Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Dreaming_of_Zone_15b
SunnyFL, hello again! Down here in Golden Gate Estates east of Naples, FL it was another very cold morning. It got into the low 30's this morning and I have to be honest: I thought I would NEVER see this in March at the bottom of the peninsula. I am constantly being told by people that have lived here for quite awhile that they've never seen it like this. Supposedly Collier County lies in Zone 10A, but I have yet to see it! I'm hoping that I've dodged another small bullet again this morning, as the temperature was very close to freezing.

amazondk
I have been watching the news on the heat wave in southern Brazil which is interesting. In reality it never gets very cold in most of Brazil, but in many areas it oes not get really hot either. In our climate here in Amazonia 32 C is the daily norm, not anything to even report as hot. It has been cool this year so far ue to all the rain. Cool is less than 30 C in the daytime. But, once the clouds break up the temperature immediatly heads over 30 C. In reality here if it rains it is winter, if it is sunny it is summer. Since it rains much less in the dry season it is called summer. Even though technically it is winter. I have seen months where every day was above 38 C during that time of year. And, this never even made the news. I guess there is a mental part to a persons relationship to climate. What seems hot to one is normal to another and what seems warm to another is cold to others. Todays forecsast high is 29 C. Another cool day. dk Don Kittelson LIFE ON THE RIO NEGRO 03° 06' 07'' South 60° 01' 30'' West Altitude 92 Meters / 308 feet above sea level 1,500 kms / 932 miles to the mouth of the Amazon River Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil - A Cidade da Floresta Where the world´s largest Tropical Rainforest embraces the Greatest Rivers in the World. . _Keith
Well, my friends wanting outdoor activities would not think so, but to a gardener this is such a beautiful weekend. It was starting to get really dry out and we needed rain bad. It started with heavy showers in the middle of the night. We got well over an inch, probably 2 inches. And so far today we have had an almost consistent light rain. You know, the kind that has no run off whatsoever and every single drop soaks into the ground. I can literally hear the plants going "ahhhhh." Now, the spring explosion will begin in earnest. In my post I sometimes express "my" opinion. Warning, it may differ from "your" opinion.
