These culms have emerged and shot up so fast, took some pics late, happy new year to all the bamboo growers out there.

Get into bamboo or get out of the garden.

Beautiful Wal.

I put some Java black in my yard about 6 months ago, Black Asper last year. While the B lako hasn't been in the ground that long the growth rate on the D asper is impressive. It gets large culms very quickly.

Just saw this. Those look very nice Wal. Can you recommend a good book on Bamboo?

Ray next time you are in Loxahatchee stop by this place http://www.tropicalbamboo.com/. They are in the same area as Folsom. I am sure there are better books then this, but I have "Bamboo for Gardens" which has some good information on growing Bamboos and the characteristics of the various species. If you like the look of Wal's Java (Gigantochloa atroviolacia), you may also want to consider looking at Dendrocalamus asper 'Betung Hitam'.

Wal, that is a really nice looking clump you got growing there. I love all the black bamboos. I also like the near instant gratification you get from watching bamboo grow. I wish palms grew like bamboo.

Nice Wal. Can anyone suggest a nice black bamboo for a home garden that would be considered a dwarf type or at least one that does not become real large in time? I certainly don't want anything close to a timber bamboo! In other words one of the smaller garden friendly bamboos.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Bambusa sp. 'New Guinea Black'

Bambusa Lako

Timor Black

15m x 8cm. Glossy black culms with green stripes.

Gigantochloa Atroviolacea

Java Black

16m x 10cm. Sooty black culms with green stripes.

There are no real dwarf black types but the B lako & G atroviolacea are pretty tight clumpers.

I love my bamboos this time of the year. They are growing like weeds, literally!!! I won't be surprised if everything double in size by the end of the wet season. I have to find a place for my B. 'Rachel Carson', as I don't want to miss out on the growth. It is not going behind the dams, like my big ones... as it is a special variegated one, so I think it deserves a special place in the garden somewhere... I really should take photos, shouldn't I?

Al,

Bambusa Lako is definitely the go. It is much slower than any other bamboos I have... and it has a nice slender culms. Nothing like bamboos swaying in the breeze... They are simply beautiful!!

Regards, Ari :)

You said it right Ari. I have B. 'Rachel Carson' too but for some reason no new culm growth yet.

Thanks Wal and Ari for suggestions on a smaller black bamboo. About how tall does B. lako grow to help give me an idea where I might plant one in the garden?

It is smaller than most... I think they will get around 15-20m.

Thanks for the nursery and book recommendation.

The only bamboo I currently own is a Phyllostachys nigra that will NEVER be planted out for lack of room.

I just visited a bamboo nursery near my work. I was very impressed with how clean they kept the place & the variety they offered. All their bamboo looked impeccable. I was told the secret is to rub mayo on the culms. Keeps them shiny up to 3 wks. Here a a few pics
