Californians - report your winter lows here

Back to "normal" in Walnut Creek, with a low of 36 F this morning, but another warm day. No rain in sight, and if we don't get some soon, we are in for a bad time, the entire state. Yesterday was like an April day here. Beautiful.

Well, I'm back to reporting highs. I hit 84.6 today. Basically all my plants will think it's spring and will start growing only to be spanked by some icy cold temps later this month  I hope not.

Ditto weather & temps today though cooler overall here & there. Appears pattern will hold steady until next week.

Today's readings nicely illustrate micro-climates & regions that were calm\ cooler compared to windy\ warm. Malibu\ Carrillo Beach is a mere 10 down-coast from Pt Mugu.

Subtle changes effecting wind & thickness levels\layers of air are lowering w/ weak impulses of easterly wind [esp at night] into early next week. Models for several weeks have been hinting about rainfall around the 20th :winkie: It has been great having this heat; I've notice some more growth of spears.

Minimum temps are noticeably cooler in places.

With this big high hanging over us, I can expect clear crisp nights. My low has been 36 F the last 3 mornings. Days have been climbing to mid to upper 60's. At least it's not freezing.

The posting of minimum temperatures & the location of the weather stations are helpful in identifying micro-climates. San Diego county has some of the most diverse regions. Yesterday Rancho San Pasqual\ Wild Animal Park recorded 94F\ 34.3C & consistently observes some of the warmest winter maximums compared to nearby Escondido or even much of California. This morning's low at the Wild Animal Pk was 35F \1.6C

Rain is a possibility next week, I hope!

I marked some of my palms with a Sharpie two days ago and today I am noticed some of my stuff is pushing growth. My Butiagrus pushed 1/2". The biggest problem are my cycads. I have a bunch that have decided to flush. Now if we get some cold temps back the new flush on some will be wiped out or look very poor. The next week looks like more of the same.

Geez, as I'm typing this I am realizing I'm sounding like a whiner. Beautiful weather and all I can do is find something to complain about. What a doofus coocoo.gif I'm going outside. Is it to early to enjoy a cold one? Hmmm, 10:21 that equals 1:21 for our buds in Florida, I think I'll have one in your honor 25cheers.gif

After several days of record breaking highs in the SF bay area, the nights are still dipping down to 35/36F in Walnut Creek. It's 35 right now at 7:45 AM and another white frost on the roof tops, but nothing plant wise to worry about.

Yesterday with a high of about 72F, I had to uncoil my hoses and start watering. I decided I couldn't wait on rain that may or may not come next week. I marked some of my palms several days ago, and they are growing some again, not much, but some. I don't see how they can grow with such chilly night temps.

We get these false springs about every other year in N. Calif, but they usually come in Feb or March. This is the earliest I've seen in a long time, but nice, since this is when we could be getting some of our coldest weather. I will take it as long as we can get it, but in the meanwhile, I can water.

Project UJEAS was ran back on January 1, 2009 for the entire month. We are seeing the chance of a North to South flow for colder air by end month. So far the global models NOAA has are "agreeing with" Project UJEAS in bringing that change to the Western USA including California.

Major thing I'm watching is how strong this North-South flow will be.

I just want anything but dry weather, lol. I'll be on AM band KVTA 1520 radio 1/20 at 11:00am talking about the pattern etc. Wish they didn't ask so much about the quake stuff. It's still a general new thing in my research. But thankfully the show discussion they said will be 33% quake, 66% weather and why SCWXA exists.

So its KVTA AM 1520 11am tomorrow.

Wednesday's system looks okay...almost like another Christmas Eve Southeast low level flow pattern. We all know how that ended up. Oh well. Talk later...

This year has been weird, this is the first time in 10 years of gardening i had leaves on some trees after x-mas. I noticed a rose bush today that was pushing leaves already. Im sure winter will set it straight. lol

My guess is it will rain alot in the next 2 weeks.

A somewhat wet morning though the bulk of the rain should occur later today. Charts are looking favorable for more rainfall into next week.

The GFS weather models are terrible for the cold storm next week. I'm not placing bets on the 18z outcome if this keeps up Happ. Since 2005, the models have been very flawed if you noticed. We'll see what happens, and I can't make a move of my chess piece in the forecast field until I see the white's of the storm's eyes.

I agree & so does the NWS! It seems we are more likely to be disappointed than surprised by rainfall & time's a wasting before winter will be over!

UJEAS is pretty much on track Happ. Watch my video here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG2cTAxzfIg

I explain briefly between the 21st, and 28th UJEAS outcome. There is a high "bulge" up in the Pacific Northwest and this will be the next storm we are eyeing. Notice the UJEAS outcome is identical to the current models? This means a sure bet a NW flow storm is coming down. Hope this helps..

Nice day of light showers & more to come later this weekend [thanks for the report, Kevin]. Not much difference between maximum & minimum temps due to moisture but colder nights are heading our way soon.

Happ,

How cold is "cold" for the coastal areas?

Bret

Primarily 40's overnight next week though some coastal areas should stay above 50F\ 10C. No major outbreak of arctic air like we experienced in December but the models consistently suggest a prolonged period of cool weather. Maybe Kevin will provide more insight how February will behave

soon we need rain. the grass we see from the rain of middle of december now is stopping growing and becoming brown in some areas of hills in the sun. its now end of january we have may be 4-6 weeks chance for good rain. this is not much time. i understand the situations very bad in california for water. for baja california were ok for this year if we have no more rain but if the next year is dry we can have a very bad situation.

we need el niño.

kevin martin what can you say for february and may be march ?

Cristóbal

Speaking of rain, the next storm unfortunately is moving overland instead of over the Pacific Ocean so rainfall amounts will likely be quite meager. Also the drier trajectory will be colder than we would like & frost is quite possible in calm areas by Tuesday morning. Then back to clear skies & mild temps w/ no sign of rain into early next week. As you point out, the rain season only has a couple more months & January has been a real disappointment :(

I was caught in a 1/2 hour hailstorm today at around 4 pm.....rain for 1 1/2 hours afer a sunny day all day.

Thankful for the precipitation as it looks dry through for the next week, according to the forecasts up here.
