Bubba, I feel like I'm watching a horse race that lasts for months! This is a riot! My FL horse is about to step on a rock that's gonna get stuck in his shoe

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

Keith,Thanks for your interest. It looks very close this year on the MH between Fl. and Tx.My biggest suprise in doing this the last two years is the lack of play from Ca. or Az. In fact,La. is much more consistently warm with their state highs. For us,it's time to buckle our seat belts!

CA and AZ seem to be consistently mild in winter, whereas TX (and FL to a certain extent), fluctuate from hot weather to cool between the cold fronts. We are alternately very warm or cool depending on which side of the latest cold front we are on. It was about 80F the last 3 days, but tomorrow won't make it to 60F because a cold front went through. It will then warm up again to 70 something, and then another cold front will come through dropping it into the 50s. This will continue through Jan and Feb before consistently staying warm. In march we will start seeing an occasional 90F. TX heats up FAAAST in the spring. Yes.

Jim, It is truly amazing how hot it can get during Winter in Texas. In Florida this Winter,we have had spectacular weather for us.It has generally been cooler and dryer with low humidity.I will take the upper 70's followed by lows in the 60's forever. Most of our wins come when Texas experiences a front and we experience low 80's somewhere.Last year at this date,Tx.led 20 to 16.Anything can happen and I keep expecting to see Ca. or Az. take off.

As for Artic fronts, they generally provide the best weather of all if you are a Southern Floridian, who sweats profusely much of the year.Jan. will be an interesting month as many experts see epocal freezes hitting Florida and the rest of the nation. Something about heat experienced several years ago in August?

South Texas is a great place to be. To me the best climate outside of Central/South FL in the continental is Texas. Long Hot, somewhat humid summers that last forever. Lots and lots of 98 degree days, day after day in summer. Warm and comfy springs and falls with decent rainfall usually. Mild winters with bright sunshine and 65-70 degree days, with occasional 80s mid winter. ONly the cold fronts that barrel through, bringing in cold air, break up the usually mild air. Some cold days, but it doesn't last too long, a day or 2, maybe 3 at most, and a mild sunny nice day is never far away. Come March, and it's as if someone turned on the switch back to heat again. The west coast can have their mild winters, I need HEAT, real TX heat and lots of it.

Hi Bubba,

This is an interesting thread. I was wondering where you get your information for the highest winter temps? Seems like a lot of work.

Also, I noticed in a California "Weather / Climate" thread that "Happ" posted the following California temps for Jan. 12. Not to be nitpicky but some of the low temps are higher than the the low temp you have for Key West on this date (Malibu with a low of 76). Santa Ana winds often can give you wide range of low temps in short distances not sure why but it happens.

No problem. I wonder why there is such a discrepency between Weather Underground and the NWS? Different weather stations for the same city? If that's the case, I'm not surprised by the discrepancy for Malibu on the 12th. That's a Santa Ana wind for you.

JOA, I note a number of disparities between the numbers I get on Weather Underground. Specifically,Santa Monica was reflected as 75/62 by Happ's numbers while Weather Underground reported 80/53.Santa Barbara was reported by Happ at 83/48 while Weather Underground reported 79/36.Riverside was reported by Happ to be 84/46 while Weather Underground reported 81/47.Santa Ana was reported by Happ to be 86/53 while Weather Underground reported 80/48.

I am certain Happ's numbers are accurate but do not understand the disparity.Fortunately,in this Winter race it takes more than a few days or degrees to make a real difference. We all heat up and cool down in backwards unison and California is getting back into the race. I have suspected they would and that last year was just an extremely cool year in California. In Florida, we are having a cool Winter and it is great!

Cristobal, I was hoping you were out there.Arizona has had a very good Winter. The difference from last year is that Yuma has not been the hot spot but Tucson to Nogales have been the warmer places. This Winter California with the extended Santa Ana has jumped into the race.Texas can always fire up quickly and Florida snags those days that are in between. It has been a cool but great Winter in Florida with many days in the 70's and lows in the 50's. I guess I am speaking for South Florida but this is great weather. You can certainly have great Winter weather and not win the High/Low.

Happ's numbers come form the National Weather Service, aren't those the "official" records?

Although California is catching up, there is really no way it can win. Even Southern California is hundreds of miles further north than south Texas and south Florida and it doesn't have a warm body of water nearby where all it takes is a wind shift and warm weather returns.

When does the contest end? Do you have one for summer?

JOA, The contest runs from Dec 1-Feb 15,which generally reflect Winter in the areas involved in this Board.I am still at a loss for disparities in the numbers. As I understand it, Weather Underground uses NWS numbers and reflects when a particular station is non-NWS.
