Vireyas - Tropical Rhododendrons

Really full garden

Recommended Posts

This is a group that has always interested me and that I have wanted to try.Two things have stopped me.One ,none are available locally and two,my climate is too hot and dry.

Soon I will have a garden at 800 - 900 m that has rain almost year round and warm days and cool nights so that my interest has been rekindled.

I know there are many many cultivars. They are supposed to be easy under the right conditions.Tell me about your experiences with these beautiful flowering plants.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Scott, these are great plants. The flowers are stunning, but unfortunately you don't get to see them for most of the year! The do like moist soil, and don't like the sun. I've got a couple of photos somewhere...will try to find them.

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

Scott,

We have a bunch of Vireyas and they grow great here. But I don't know much about them. We just plant them and enjoy them when they're flowering! :) There's actually a Vireya society here on the island. Check out their website:

And here's a photo of one of ours, taken minutes ago.

Bo, thanks Im going to look into this.I know that they like to be pot bound and that many people just place the pot near the base of a tree and just let it go.This is the way I treat my vanda orchids.I just place them on top a pile of half rotted coco husks placed around the base of a tree and let them alone.
