How fast are they?  I have a few just coming up from seed - they're at the 1-leaf stage now.  How long before I'm seeing that great crownshaft?  Remember, they'll be growing in pots in the great white north - spending summers outside and winters in the conservatory.

Nice palm Clark. How long has it been in the ground?

Don...

Well, I had a six 8 footers which 6 died....as they were too big and too long in a bucket replaced some with 3 gallons 7 years ago!  The 3 gallons will be pass up the other two 8 footers in about 3 years I figure!

Plant small hardy palms!!  If you buy it and it looks pretty chances are it was babied and it won't make it! :(

I had two 3 gallon size spindles in I  guess something like 15 gallon pots for about 2 years. They certainly grew but never did trunk within that time. I have since moved one into the ground in the front of the house I guess sometime in early to mid summer 2007 and it exploded in growth but still has yet to form a self cleaning trunk. I planted another one in the back yard at the start of fall and it has picked up speed too. Both of these handled a 29F windy freeze without damage this year. But, I did have smaller 3 gallon that I planted in the ground at the beginning of summer 2007 that was 90% defoliated during they freeze. The cold hardiness of this species is hit and miss I guess, plus I think the first two mentioned were quite a bit bigger so I guess it is true that some hardiness is gained with size.

My results from this palm have come from treating it like any heat seeking aired plant,  Place it near a road or something that gives off heat....all night long....water during the peak high temps of the year.  Most important don't under any term give it any attention!!!  She run away and die if so!....give her natural food too! :o

If your planning on trunking them in a pot.....buy T bills.....plant them in 3 gallons!

This palm has big sinker roots and need to establish root first before she'll grow.....lesson learned! ???

Plant some ice plant around her and add mulch around the trunk....this gives heat!  Plant it on a street next to a rock....more heat... and skateboard with the kids! :)

That's amazing!  My spindle OTOH is a tender, tempermental one - it sulks at any temps below about 38.  I've seen bottles take worse.

We almost lost it during the dread freeze of 2003, when we had about an hour at 27F.  It was well-protected under a "tent" of blankies n' tarps, but lost 3 of its 5 fronds.

But since then, it has become a lil rocket, pumping out fronds nicely.   It has its spindle-shape now.  just love that palm.

Wow this amazing.....is this the same palm!  Of course!  But it's been babied!...There are many reasons that I can mcome up with your discovery!

1.  Food ....is it natural

2.  Past home..was it transported from a weird home! we could go into this it in length....$750,000.00 dollars to learn this later!

3.  Soil!

4. Location at present.

5. Do you play Mozart, Beethoven  or Bob Marley? Just joking!

Thanks

I have been watching the growth rate of this Spindle at work . Just over a year ago a 'Bozo' was cleaning up and removed all these infloreseces . They have all been replaced now . So it looks like approx 10cms of trunk in a year . Could be nearly 3m of trunk on this one .

I have posted pics of the very narrow base of this one before . I will take some fresh ones tomorrow , and bring the tape measure .

Here is a picture of mine which to date has not produced those great looking inflorenences. It is 15 years old from seed. Certainly something to look forward to.

Thanks for the photo

The robot on Lost In Space was inspired by, and likely created by the same people who made Robby the Robot from the 50's scifi movie "Forbidden Planet". Robby the Robot even had a cameo on one Lost In Space episode.

Hi David, like Matty said, put them in full sun. I grew a couple in pots for a 2 years and they did great. I put 3 gallon size directly into 15 gallon pots. When I finally planted them in the ground, they had filled the entire pots with roots in those 2 years. By the way, I don't get too fancy with my potting soil, just el generico walmart or home depot potting soil has worked well for all my potted plants - it is usually a fast draining soil though. Here is a pic I took today of one of them I transplanted from its pot to the ground about a year ago - so I guess it is 3 years old from 3 gallon size in all. It took 29F without a problem in that spot. It spotted up a little on the fronds but then reabsorbed the spots a few days later when it warmed up.

By the way, that is a bottle palm frond in the foreground which was well bound and protected unlike the spindle so I guess you can tell which is a little hardier. Here is a pic of the bottle in question taken today on the left of the 3.

I love hyophorbe color.

I'll put H. indica in the ground, but spindles would have to go in a pot for me. I know Clarke saw 22F at the bottom of the hill, but his one in the first photo is up by the house, surrounded by a circle driveway, and under a big canopy of palms. My yard is different animal.
