When I found out the dates for the So.-Cal. banquet, I immediately started looking into this to see if I could come out for a long weekend. My friend Ken and I booked our flights, made a few phone calls, and after many emails, arrived in San Diego on thursday morning. Bill (BS Man About Palms)was gracious enough to meet us at the airport and drive us around for the day.

Our first stop was at Mission Bay to see the enormous Jubaea's.

James,

It was in the low 40's I think every morning we were out there. The high's were always in the 50's or in the upper 60's at best. The guys know how I felt. :(  I don't like the cold.....the hotter the better.

Dean said he thinks this is Ravenea monticola.

Jeff

Mod Edit: Slight correction Jeff --- This palm was purchased as Dypsis 'Kingaly." I'm not sure what it is other than some kind of Ravenea, but not 'Monticola.' Here's a link to a pic of the R. 'monticola'

Do the Howea's grow well there? It's not that far down from SD.

And thanks, and next time you come to South Florida, please come by again so we can talk. :D

Jeff,

You and Ken obviously had a great trip out west! Really enjoyed seeing all the photos in this and the other threads. Next time you head out west, make it Hawaii! HIPS has its annual event, the BBQ, at this time of the year as well. That's our best attended event (last year around 145 participants). This year, it's on Feb. 1st at 5 p.m. (that's tomorrow!) in Wailoa River State Park in Hilo. :)

Bo,

Well thanks for the offer and update. But this would be a much more longer and more expensive trip from us this far away. But.....I will keep it in mind and it sounds like quite a large group that shows up. Thats fantastic. And of course, Hawaii also offers so many beautiful gardens and private collections. I just wish you guys were not so far away. All the Calif. guys(and Kim  :D ) were extreamly nice to us. Everyone that opened up their garden to us. And we still had a couple of offers but just didn't have enough time.

Moving on to Bob DeJong's yard, here Ken and I are just meeting Bob for the first time. Bob had a very manicured yard stuffed full of rare and unusual palms and cycads. We appreciated getting the chance to come by.
