This is one of the best palm I have!Trunk is almost black red in color. Leaves are blue green. It grows well! I should have planted in a more prominent spot.

Ron, that plant looks so much nicer from just ~5 months ago when I saw it. It was beat up then. Looks like it has two new fronds.

Great photo Ron!

It is going to take up all of that garden bed though if that’s what you were after with a prominent position! :D I’ve done the same thing.

Thanks for selling me that one Ron! It seems to be doing great!  (I hope I didn't jinx it just talking about it!) :o

What is Dypsis "Big Red"? It looks like a D lepto lastelliana sort of palm. Fill me in guys.

That's what I was gonna ask:  Is is along the teddy/redneck lines?  Or something completely different?

Someone of the Aussie group posted a pic of one some time back. It grows much slower than an average lastelliana and the dark red tomentum goes up most of the petiole, wheras the regular lastelliana stops the tomentum at the base of the petiole.  The leaves of it have a noticeable "blue/green" tint to them.  It also seems to be more cool hardy too. My "box sized" lastelliana is showing some sure stress from this winter, while my 15 gal sized "Big Red" seems unfazed.

Matty, if you walked backwards about 15' from where you were in this shot, you'd hit it. :D

Any seed available anywhere? :innocent:

Following up on Matt's post about seed availability, did it survive and can you post an updated photo?

Wow! A pic of mine before it was in the ground! I did plant it and it's in my "4 lastelliana of the apocalypse" thread.. but here is an update as of this AM. If I had more heat and had put in the sun, I think it would be bigger.

Looking good Bill. I love the dark coloring on these!  This palm is on the top of my wish list once seed becomes available.
