Sin mosquitos... :P

I will take mosquitos over mudslides and fires any day.

you can spray for mosquitos :)

We knock our skeeters silly with wildfires, then bury them with mudslides....works for us  :;):

Well........I'm, HOME !! My wife's going to let me just post this one quick reply (have more important things to do :D ). What a great trip we had. I can't even think of where to start. I took well over 300 hundred pictures(don't worry, they won't all get put on, don't want to bore some of you). But, I will start out by saying that Ken and I couldn't of had a better time. And I sincerly mean that. Everyone we met was extreamly nice and helpful. We met alot of new people and caught up with some old friends that I have not seen for quite some time. And I just would like to thank everyone for treating us so warmly. But, special thanks to Bill, he spent so many hours with us driving us everywhere. It made things go so much more smoother. Thanks Bill! I owe you!

2ndday022.jpg

Wow...That Dypsis does look awesome. Not sure, but it looks like a hybrid of Lutescens and Cabadae. I'm very impressed with the variety of palms in the post. Makes me want to get some more seeds. Thanks alot guys!

It looks like you guys had fun.

Cheers,

All I will say is that mosquitos can really ruin the fun of being outside in a palm garden or anywhere for that matter.  Even with our fast draining soil and no standing water (except in the bromeliads and our Coqui tree frogs help out with that) we still do have some mosquitos at certain times of the year.  However, they are not enough to bother so that we don't want to be outside.  However, in some of the wetter areas of the island mosquitos can be quite bothersome at times.

Yes, I'm sure spraying can help but what do they use and what are the short or long term side effects.  Do those chemicals used work their way into the water table or soils and thereby get into the food chain?  I also hesitate to spray some of those insect repellents on my skin to be absorbed into the bloodstream.  Not even mentioned are the various diseases mosquitos can infect us with.  Anyway, it's something to think about or be aware of.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Michael (Ferreira),

I believe this to be the same plant that Rancho Soledad has been selling as many things. The latest is Dypsis psammophila. Which it is not of course.

It is more Dypsis albofarinosa then anything else. I have the Rancho Soledad plant in shade and looks like this one. However it looks like it can take fun sun and does better with it.

What do you think Bill? You saw both.

Mike, just wait, theres some more suprises coming!  (Just a mini-clue, the recent palm Matty got from Dean appears to not be the largest in So Cal!)

Len- I think I agree with that clumper, Jeffs is in full sun and compact, yours is shaded and looks stretched.

At this point it got dark and the passage of time occured. Ralph gave his slide show about Costa Rica, I couldn't take pictures, so there.

Also, the auction started after that, I was too busy buying palms and Cycads to take a pic.

Got a few things, including a Dioon Merolae. Remember that.

You were the host with the most, on the whole West Coast . . . . .

Thank you for helping squire our guests on Sunday!

The tree in posts 138 and 139 is a Magnolia solangiana (someone correct me on the exact name, but that's close) and it blooms rabidly in the winter.  It's one of the few plants that will grow both here and in Ohio and just as well, too.  Also Magnolia stellata.
