Chris,

You're probably not going to be inundated with responses. Not too many flights to Kadugli these days.... :(

We're definitely looking forward to your photos, though, and hopefully you'll see some interesting palms. Probably a bunch of Hyphaene and those can definitely look very interesting in habitat.

Just curious, how are you going to get to Kadugli? The Sudanese airlines are not exactly known for safety. One airline, Sarit Air Lines, lost their ENTIRE fleet of five Soviet built An-12 freighters in the span of 13 months (2003-2004). There were two Sudanese crashes in 2005 with fatalities, but none sofar in 2006.

Travelling with the UN, Bo Goran,   there is a helicopter company out of Switzerland called Helog,  I think they have a modern fleet.

Chris,

Definitely safer! Swiss efficiency! I know they operate French built Aerospatiale (or Eurocopter, the new name) helicopters. Have a safe - and interesting - trip!

Aloha,

I used to be CHRIS on the old board.  Finally got back on line   after a very busy time at my work these last 3 months,  chris.oz is a better handle I think !

Oh, OK, didn't realize that! Yes, I agree, but why not also add some basic info to your signature about your location?

Dear Chris & Bo Goran  :)

I liked your conversation on Sudan and its

flight saftey standards.

Dear Bo Goran are you a piolet, since you are very

well informed about which country airline uses which

brand of manufacturer_Simply Superb.

and are you an european, since i one post you

mentioned about your trip from sweden to Swiss-alps

in your early days..

them how come you have settled in hawaii.is it work or

do you love the flora & fona of that Island_Please comment.

Now to our friend Chris wish you all successes in your

work at sudan, and wish to see pictures from that place.

and also do collect the seeds of plants of your interest.

I am shure you will get U.N priority coustom celearence.so

seeds can all be taken with you and any number !

Kris,

(And I hope Chris doesn't mind me temporarily hi-jacking his thread...). No, I'm not a pilot, but I've worked in commercial aviation all my life. We have our own business and we maintain a database with the transaction history of every single airliner worldwide, going back 60 years or so. This means we can live anywhere, and Hawaii is the perfect place to live, as far as I'm concerned! And yes, I'm Swedish, but my wife is American, and I've lived in the USA for many years.

Chris, welcome back to Palmtalk, and have a nice trip.

Bo, it's funny you mention aircraft odisseys...I've escaped twice from serious airline accidents: Once in a small King air, in Brazil, and another time in Switzerland, on board of a sweedish made Saab airplane...well, it was snowing, but my wife was so scared that she prefered us to drive back to Brussels instead...

Gileno,

Wow, twice, that's pretty scary! I've been on almost 2000 flights in my lifetime, but actually never a close call. So far so good....

Just curious, the time in Switzerland, was that by any chance Crossair in Zürich on 21 Feb 1990?

Sorry for my english, Bo.

I think that was really such a bad experience, never again.

Reading my post again it sounds like the accidents did happen...What I meant was "I've escaped from them..." (pretty close of a crash, with strongest imaginable turbulence and clapping hands landing, thanks...)

It's amazing how you know so much about airlines (and palms !)...I may as well ask for your advice the next time I have to take a suspicious aircraft  :P

Until my recent shift in activities in the forest sector I have worked in aviation in one form or another my whole working life.  Airplanes are wonderful machines with a life of their own.  I have always felt that any take off and landing you walk away from is a good one.

Chris have a safe trip.  The Sudan is not really on my list of places for immediate visit, but I am sure it will be interesting.   Happy palm hunting.

And, I look forward to seeing some pictures.

Bo,

I wonder if you have to be careful about hi-jacking threads with mention of aviation in light of the current world tensions?
