Liana is the most organized palm collector I`ve heard of...She photographs the seeds of each species and then she keeps an album with the plant`s development...

Boy, post 156 looks like a Saribus.  Are both species thorns that big?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Gileno,

After looking at post #97 and 98, the palm really looks like Hydriastele kasea. Especially with all the spots and the look of the leaves. (??)

Hi Jeff:

It could be... ???

I've heard that there are a few nurserymen and collectors in São Paulo who have been growing Hydriastele kasesa for some time now. I guess they've put a commercial name of ¨the black lakka¨. (According to the book "Palmeiras Brasileiras e exóticas cultivadas", from Lorenzi).

I'll have to ask Liana where she got her seedling from cause I've never had such a palm in cultivation and so she decided to dig a small one out for me as a gift from her clump. Well, she was so positive about Cyrtostachys glauca...

Thanks for your trained eye, anyway...

I was surprised too. My Liv benthamii are still very small but from the pictures you can imagine why the species is called "alligator's teeth" here in Brasil...

Hi Aaron...nice job with your palms. I`ve had dogs trained with coconut and mangos before, but maybe I should try it with tangerines sometime too... :)

Thanks Kai...wooden shoes made from palm trunks sound comfortable...
