Palm Garden in Sergipe, Brazil

Recommended Posts

Well, thanks for the comments everyone...

If you get so enthusiastic about this garden this thread may well become another long epic with many pages...I was actually very impressed with all these palms and took over 200 pictures while there... :)

Chuck:

I fell in love with those Beccariophoenix too...Can`t wait till my seedlings start showing up their glory...

Jeffrey:

Yes, Bo nailed it. It`s a young C. renda...They have several around the property.

Kris Bro:

I shoot in high resolution and then I resize to fit the limit and post directly...no photobucket yet.

Bo:

I`d guess they get something around 1800 mm of rain there with a dry season from Jan to March. It gets much cooler in the night time than in Sirinhaem  though, they are located some 40 km away from the ocean at ~100 m elevation. Even in January the temperature drops to some 20 degrees at night (maybe less than 14 in the winter). Sun intensity is NE Brazilian standard year round, during the daytime though...

Al:

They do irrigate there and they have a gardener full time living in the property. Being a cattle ranch they use lots of manure with their predominating clayey soil. There`s a small dam in the property.

MattyB:

I guess the orangeish stain is from the seasonal flying ash from the burning sugarcane nearby...She commented that they get covered with that sticky ash every once year, and it sticks to the humid trunks.

Ready for a couple dozen more photos?

Gileno,

Your friends have a beautiful garden and will only get nicer over time. I was also curious on how much rainfall they get there in that area. Tell your friends that they now have a worldwide audience. :D  And maybe they could consider joining the IPS someday.

Thanks Jeff, I will...

They`ve actually been lurking the IPS board since i`ve  mentioned...they can read some English but they don`t feel comfortable with spelling and get a little shy...Wish they could participate too...She is very active in the Yahoo group for Palm admirers in Portuguese and she is my candidate for the President of the future Brazilian Palm Society.

Gileno,

Thanks for the additional photos. About the Phoenix rupicola - I believe these are single trunked palms, and the one in post #51 is multi trunked. Probably a hybrid?

About your friends' participation on PalmTalk - many times when posting photos, there isn't that much information that's necessary so the language shouldn't be that much of an obstacle.

And if your friends want to add more info, how about this: they post it in Portuguese, and then when you log on, you can always add another post with the translation to English? And if you don't log on for a few days, then there are probably other Forum members who might be willing to do the translation (Don comes to mind...). Seems to me that this is a minor obstacle and should not stand in the way if they want to be active here!

Bo-Göran

Jeff - in case you havn't seen this already, Gileno addressed the rainfall in post #41.

Leilani Estates, 25 mls/40 km south of Hilo, Big Island of Hawai'i. Elevation 880 ft/270 m. Average rainfall 140 inches/3550 mm

Interesting concept for the garden. Not so much using common overall landscape or garden techniques/properties, but rather more like a palm display. One of each. That is really a neat concept.

Gallery style with grass! I love it!

Len, From what I understand, thats what is known as "Gallery style". Pauleen Sullivans place in Hawaii is like that, but with black lava rock instead of grass.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Nice collection! "Gallery Style " is different, if you have the acreage. I'm  limited in space , so I tend to use the "Pile Them In Style" :D

Gileno - great pictures and a great garden, thanks for posting. It's difficult to tell if that's a pure W. filifera, but I don't think it is.  There should be more "threads" between the leaf blades, the leaves should be more grey and less bright green, and the trunk should be thicker. But, even in habitat, I'm surprised by what W. filifera look like sometimes....
