Tad,

I have a couple of questions. Since the Washingtonias have virtually no roots left, how long will it be before they are established at their new home and have a decent sized crown? This is assuming they will be well watered and taken care of.

As I recall you orderd the olives from Isreal or some place from Europe.  What makes them so special and did you use a rooting hormone on them?

I would say with decent care and water, the washies will be rooted out in 6 to 8 months. and we put a respectable root ball on them, I get no complints about lack of rootball.

I do not own the olives, they are a contract grown crop, they are from Israel, they are an israelli variety.

There are more olive trees of this variety here at my farm, than ANYWHERE else in the U.S.

Berkely germplasm center has one tree, and a few.. I'd say less than 500 have been propagated from it.

Yes we used dip n grow at a very high concentration.

stay tuned for the next round of olive propagation 101, its gonna be alot of fun!:) should kick off wednesday or thursday.

Tad,

I saw where you were propigating one of the "garden varieties" of Agave, but have you thought about propigating and growing some of the more exotic types of Agaves? You can hardly open a garden magazine now without seeing Agaves being featured.  Even the New Yorkers have discovered them.

There are many smaller growing types, and many new hybrids with lots of color too that are ideal for container culture. A friend gave me some smaller growing ones a couple of years ago, and they have produced pups like crazy, so they are easy to propigate and they should do well in your climate. Some are extreamly cold hardy. Some of the rarer, and newer ones are worth big $$$, but they are just as easy to grow as the common ones.

They ship bare root eaisly, and never miss a beat when repoted.  They can even dry out and still spring to life when repotted and given some water. Just a thought, but I'm sure the competition is already out there growing these things. I expect in S. Texas you could turn a crop in 3 years, maybe even in two.

Dick, yes, I am doing some agaves, I just got a bunch of liners in from the now defunct kaktus korral, and I was suppossed to have some varigated stuff in from a producer in india..the broker in florida screwed up and lost the order should have them in march. we are shipping a batch to a grower in Azuza Ca. on monday.

They have a big problem here though, the rhino beetle, agaves are like crack, meth, weed, and viagra with a shot of jaegermeister for the rhino beetle.  but it is somthing we grow.

the olives started around 11:30 with a 30 minute lunch.

I was going to ask you if the cycad scale had reached S. Texas. I guess there is no effective treatment for it yet? I don't know if it's true, but I heard that was an "introduction" that Fairchild Trop. Gardens made. It only takes one little sneeky insect to multiply like crazy.

Dick we have scale here in south TX, we keep it in check using liberal amounts of LORSBAN 4E, soap, and citrus oil.  it has crashed the market on sagos, we blame the box stores for bringing it in from florida. Now I know al in kona is gonna have a hissy hearing that we spray for bugs but we do, unfortunately I depend on these plants to feed, cloth, and house myself and my family, so I have to spray the little buggers till they are dead.

God bless ftg for bringing in the curse and scourge of asian scale.

these get boxed up and sent 3 day ground to where ever it is they need to go. I dont market these direct, they are sold through a broker from Florida, by a sales person in San Diego, a set up I find quite amusing.
