Howdyall:

Riffing off another thread by Robbin, what do you do on New Year's Eve to bring in the new year?

In La Habra, California, we drink, amount varies according to taste (or lack thereof), we go to bars, wear silly hats and use silly noisemakers, and we shoot off fireworks.

Quite a LOT  of fireworks, to my surprise.  Dogs and cats hide under the Swooning sofa and cringe, poor things, sensitive hearing can be a b*tch sometimes.

We (not including me) used to shoot off guns.

LOTS of guns.

My first New Year's in California was 1985-86 and 12:01 a.m. sounded like war torn Bosnia, during a period of extreme instability and, perhaps, genocide.

LOTS of gunfire.  (Sorta like El Screamo, back in the day!  :))

We will have a really big bonfire and fireworks, with copious amounts of alcohol.

The gunfire depends on who shows up and whether we want them here.  ROFLMAO.

In my post I sometimes express "my" opinion. Warning, it may differ from "your" opinion. If so, please do not feel insulted, just state your own if you wish. If Brazilians know how to do anything it is party.  And, aside from Carnaval New Years is one of the biggest party.  And, it is the biggest party with people in one location.  The attendance this year is projected at 1,2 million people.  Traditionally people wear white in Brazil to usher in the New Year.  This has a lot to do with Afro Brazilian religious traditions as well.  At the turn of the year the loud speakers lining the beach turn to Carnaval music, Samba, and the party goes on till dawn.  I have been there a few times for New Years and it is an unforgetable experience.  The combination of the city, crowd, beach, and tropical summers night coupled with the massive fireworks explosion (display) pretty much takes your breath away.

This year I think I may watch the party on TV and then I can even go to bed early as Rio is 2 hours ahead of Manaus.  Who knows.  There is virtually no control on fireworks sale in Brazil so people are shooting off hand held rocket bombs all over the place.   Here in Manaus the Ponta Negra beach area on the Negro River is the city sponsored fireworks party.  I went last year, but this year we are just going to stay home with our bew baby.

Paying tribute to Iamanja - the afro brazilian Mother of the Seas.  People put out little rafts into the surf in tribute to her.  Iamanja will take your troubles and pain to the bottom of the ocean and the New Year will start fresh.

I kinda prefer to stay at home too. In years past we have gone to the beach and rented a condo, where they can shoot off the big firework rockets and mortars professionally over the water, but many times we just stay home to avoid all the drunks out on the road. We have enough drunks here on New Years Eve, LOL!

Dave I remember in Los Angeles that everyone would shoot off guns. Culver City sounded like the wild west!

Soon, I'll find out what NYE is like in So-Flo, in the land of Homestead, and the Redland Farming area.

Stay tuned . . . .

Well, I can't find the other thread where I posted a worried prediction, and sure enough, what I was worried about happened as I watched from afar.

Was at Matty B's for New Years... (Thanks Matt and Jen) with good friends all around and we went on the deck to watch the great view of people setting of fireworks all over....on a clear night....with "red flag warnings" up...   musta seen fireworks from 25 different area's.

Sure enough, some one set fire to two large trees about a mile from Mattys house.  Glad the house didn't go.  We could watch all of it progress, the fire in the first tree, then it set fire to a steep bank and the other tree, first kinda burned out as you could see the emergency support with their sirens heading towards it.  They pulled up just as the second tree was going out.

Matt got a little tense.

Ah, last night.

Up early for reasons to be explained, and by ten, I was out like a light and not from consumption of anything.

Tired.

BUT!  Heard our neighbor shooting off a firearm at midnight, BAM BAM BAM, etc., went back to sleep.

Snore.
