Another new favorite ( since it was the first time I ever saw one ) Copernica Falaensis.

I was trying to figure out how I could stick that thing in my suitecase.  After a while my head hurt so I just gave up

The tips of the leaves sort of flare out and curve a bit upward which is a cool feature of the plant and the leaves were a lot more rigid than I expected.

I've seen a lot of pictures of this plant on the web but seeing and touching it raises your appreciationof it to a whole new level

Hey Gene, great thread keep up the good work. The lower leaves are cut off the Cycas sp. to help control the Aulacaspis scale. If anything, all it does it make it look better temporarily.

The buildings in the other photo were the Garden House on the left and the Corbin Building on the right.

Thanks for the info Ryan.

Back at the conservatory...

That place was just so choc full of intersting plants that you will miss a lot of them.  I don't think I noticed this palm when I went there the previous Wednesday.

OK so what is it?  Vampire palm?

Another palm I totally missed the first time around -- and this one was a palm that I was actually looking for.

Can you spot the Licuala Mapu?

special thanks to Will Deboe (piouspalms) for pointing it out in this forum.

I have a new appreciation for its mottling - apparently it works in camouflaging the palm in and area in semi shade.  Probably even more effective under the forest canopy where sunlight is dappled by leaves overhead.

Another cool palm-- Sommeria elegans.

Jeff Searle has an even better specimen of this in the "calling out to RPS,Ortanique,Faulkner,Searle, etc..." thread.  Check it out.

OK so just to give the other plants a chance  the people of Fairchild devoted a room to non palms.

How very nice of them.

One of the attractions but was unfortunately dormant at the time was Mr Stinky - an Amorphophallus titanum.
