Don't worry there's more.  This is just about half of my first day where I came in late and only had 2 hours to go around.

The next time I went I spent the whole day there.

Matt - as awesome as Fairchild's is Bo's garden collection (with the unique variety of palms) could really give it a run for its money.  I really enjoyed the pictures of your trip in Hawaii.  I hope there are more coming in that thread too.

Tallest old man palm

What is the difference between an old man palm and the windmill palm.  My windmill palm looks just like the palm you have pictured here.

Mari - The Old Man Palm or Cocothrinax Crinita is a palm that comes from Cuba.  Its distinguishing feature is that it has fibrous leaf sheaths that are so long that it appears as if the palm is covered with hair.  Other palms also have this but nowhere as long as the Old Man Palms.  Think Cousin It from the Adam's Family.  I guess this is more pronounced when the palm is relatively young- at about 5 feet of trunk tall- in terms of propotion to the palm.  In that tall specimen it would appear to be just a fibrous covering.  Also a palm that old is many decades old so the hairs may have been worn away a bit.

Anyway on with pictures.

The crown of a Baileyana.  Its a bit hazy because this was just after Hurricane Noel passed through.  It was an overcast and windy day.

I was on the way to hug the trunk of a bailey at this point

This one is out of sequence but I thought I'd add it.

One of the Copernicia Macroglossas aka Cuban Petticoat Palms had some "petticoat damage" so I went in closer to take a shot.

I like them better wit the petticoat on by the way

THis area is the  Palmetum and was probably planted at the verry beginnings of Fairchild so there are a lot of full grown palms in this area
