What a thread!

:o Bo, your Lodoiceas are getting really large! They grew a lot since I was there in 2004. Now one can walk beneath them.

That Euterpe precatoria at Bo's (see Post #317) is beautiful "fo sho"!  Gotta be one of my most favorite looking palms.  Bo, don't let that Acai fruit go to waste either.

Love those Lodiceas too!  Do you think I could get one of those seeds when it produces next year!  LOL.  I keep looking for a Lodicea at Wal Mart, Home Depot, Lowes and other local nurseries but for some reason they are never available.  Guess there's not much call for them - probably most feel the leaves get too big for their gardens.  Could be dangerous as both the leaves and fruit fall to the ground!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

The Euterpe precatoria hasn't produced seed yet! :(   Otherwise I would have left Paul in Hawaii, filled a dummy with seed, and set it next to me on the plane to get a bunch home. :o

What could they possibly be growing that they would need a fence so high? It looks like something some hippies threw together  :D . Seriously though thanks for the kind words Matty about our hale. I could actually see one of my Neoveichia Storkii's in the second pic. I thought it would be 10 ft. tall by now  :D ! If any of you palm freaks wanna stay in paridise right next to one of the premier palm gardens in the world and see what rain looks like again LMK and we'll hook it up. Thanks again Matty and paul for posting all of your awesome pics but it is making me home sick!

Wow. So many gorgeous palms! I love that you included some of the towns and houses there.

That Arenga pinnata is amazing! How old do you think it is.

Nice shuttle-cock too ???

Scott,

The Arenga pinnata (post 271) was planted in April 1996 from a 35 G pot. It was about 12 ft tall at the time and came from Palms of Paradise. It was probably about 8 years old at the time, give or take a year, so as of right now, probably 18-20 years since germination. Overall height as of right now at least 50-55 ft.

Also a note I forgot to mention about Steve's variegated pandanus on the right of his entrance gate; it's unarmed.  I thought that was strange and a nice change from the usual vicious serations the Pandanus leaves usually have.
