This is one of the many streams that Scenic Drive crosses over on your way north out of Hilo towards the HTBG.  This is an amazing area where Archontophoenix alexandrae have naturalized and created a dense palm rainforest.

Inside Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens

Paul with what appears to be a variegated Licuala sp.  The middle leaflet is missing.  Rabbits? Gophers? Chupacabras????

We wanna give a big thanks to Sean Callahan, Horticulturist and Garden Manager @ HTBG who gave us a warm welcome, a fun golf cart ride, and answered all our questions.  He's a former San Diegan and so were several of the employees there at the garden.  They were all sporting their Chargers hats which made us feel right at home....until we turned and saw 50 foot tall Metroxylons then it was back to reality.  Thanks to Bo for introducing us to him too.  Sean said, "Any friend of Bo's is a friend of mine!" :D

I'm very interested in what you guys think this palm is below.  Sean got it from Jeff Marcus Floribunda as Dypsis rivularis if that helps.  But it's suckering, regularly pinnate, and dosen't seem to resemble D. riv to me.  I honestly have no idea what it could be though.  Look at the interesting spotting on the newest node of trunk.  I almost took a dip in the drink to get this shot.

HawaiiII-331.jpg

HawaiiII-332.jpg

If we can get an I.D. I'll call Sean and let him know.  Come on Palm Society, now is your time to shine. :)

And no Dean, "moderately clumping dypsis from the high plateau" is not an acceptable answer. :D

Mod Edit: Good thing I read this entire post before offering my snarky ID.  :D

Bren, the only orange in 395 that I see are the pendulous seeds from what could be a Linospadix sp.

Bren,

Yes, if you're referring to the last photo in that post, that is a Linospadix. Not sure of the species, but Jerry might be able to fill us in since it's in his garden.

And the "nicy burgundy" plant in 429 is Miconia. A major invasive pest that's creating problems in various areas because it takes over completely, and chokes out all other vegetation. It'll get very bushy and get up to 30-40 ft eventually. There's a special Miconia Eradication Team here in Leilani Estates, but we've never had a problem on our property. Onomea Bay/HTBG is Ground Zero for Miconia, because it was introduced there more than 40 years ago (reportedly by the late Donn Carlsmith, who owned a large piece of land overlooking Onomea Bay, and also including part of the area that's right next to HTBG's visitor center, which was built in 1998. Of course, at the time, Miconia was just seen as a very attractive plant and nobody could anticipate that it would turn into a major nuisance!

The last I saw Paul was here, where I left him.

Well, that's all the pictures I have of the trip.  My camera was full.  I even deleted the movie of Paul doing his chicken dance to make more room.  I think he's got about 50 more pictures so stay tuned.
