Beautiful palms and beautiful pictures! I always like the volcanic feeling of Hawaiian palm pictures with slope, lava rocks, cinder.

My "palm envy" focuses on the Dictyocaryum!

What is this?

I now am compelled to build a greenhouse to start a Pinnanga and Areca collection. No joke. They are like palm candy.

Thanks for all the closeup and odd viewpoints, as well as the narration.

Do it Terry, most of the Pinanga and Areca I've grown in my cold frame look great year round.  Although I'm planning to plant (and kill?) them outside once they're big enough...

Also, thanks for the pics Paul and Matt.  Brings back good memories from my time in Hawaii long ago.

Sweet place Dean! You've got some real treats there.

That madfox really is something else. Also, it looks as if one of the palms I could not identify at the lodge I stayed at in Costa Rica is a Bentinckia nicobarica. Thanks for the pics Matt & Paul.

Paul & Matty - Even I'm enjoying this thread, makes me almost think I'm in Hawaii too!  lol

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Paul/matt,

Like usual, it looks like you had a great time out there. Your pitures are nice, Dean's garden has really come along. I just love all the tropicals being grown out there. The ti plant in pic. #53 is "Miss Andrea".....one of my favorites! Thanks for the tour, beautiful!!!

Yeah Paul, that was Actinhoritis and the entire leafer w/ spines after that was Vershafeltia splendida.  I think shortly after the seared ahi I got too drunk on beer and saki and they made me go to bed.  Hope there's no pics of that. ???

It's one of Dean's many Philedendrons that are attaching to the Ohia trees.  He'll have to clue us in on the specifics.
