Sounds like a great way to spend your birthday.  I'm glad you had a fab day.  Let's hope you get good germination results, so you have palms to remind you of your birthday for years to come.

Which makes me wonder.  If the now-extinct Jubaea endemic to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) possibly had a life span of 2000 years, does that mean that the Chilean Jubaea is somewhere near as long-lived?  So let's speculate.  If a Chinese admiral had visited Chile or Rapa Nui and collected Jubaea seeds, delivering them to Emperor Hadrian along with some alpacas, and if the Romans had planted the Jubaea seeds, might some of the trees still be alive (if they survived the Vandals and the Sack of Rome?)

[i'm thinking of a popular book claiming that a Chinese fleet visited America in 1421.  The concise rebuttal is at Bad Archaeology.  We humans get around (after all, Polynesians found Rapa Nui, but here in Florida you can go outside at night and hear the chirps of bobolink birds flying overhead.  They're migrating from grassy breeding grounds (including airports) far north of us, to Argentina.  Could wayward birds have delivered Jubaea seeds to Rapa Nui?
