Singapore Botanical Garden

The Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859 by an Agri-Horticultural Society. Planned as a leisure garden and ornamental park, the Society organised flower shows and horticultural fetes. In 1874, the Society handed over management and maintenance of the site to the government. The scientific mission of the Gardens evolved when the colonial government assumed management and deployed Kew-trained botanists and horticulturists to administer the Gardens.

In 1988 Dr Tan Wee Kiat became Director of the Gardens. While the Gardens remained committed to its role in making Singapore a Garden City and meeting recreational needs, renewed focus on being a leading international institution for tropical botany was established. Under Dr Tan's direction, the 3-hectares National Orchid Garden, a major tourist attraction today, was established.

In June 1990, Singapore Botanic Gardens came under the management of the newly formed National Parks Board.                                                                               It really is an amazing and expansive garden and you need at least a full day to see it all properly. I believe that it is said to be the world’s top orchid display/collection. These shots were taken at random as we walked around and they are a bit mixed up with most of the orchid pics together and palms at the start and end.

Cyrtostachys yellow or orange I think.

I guess this is a Lodoicea maldivica as there was a name plate in the area talking of them taking the pollen from one to another in another part of the garden. Also there was a small wired-off area where there was a seed planted direct in the ground.

Jim,

Great photos of a great botanical garden! And definitely one of my favorite places. When I go there, I like to stay at the Shangri-La, and when I go out for my morning run, the Botanic Garden is only about a mile away or so. And to run through the garden early in the morning is pretty spectacular, because there are a number of groups all over the place, practicing Tai chi exercises in this very beautiful and serene place.

Thanks for showing us some of that beautiful botanical garden.  The palms have that grown to perfection look.  Guess they don't get much wind there.  Are they pretty much like parts of Malaysia that call themselves "The land below the wind"?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Jim,

This garden is truely amazing. Their palm and orchid collections are one of the best in the world. When I made a visit there a few years back, our good friend who works there was able to take us around in a golf cart, which made viewing the gardens not only easier, but we were able to cover lots of ground quicker. I hope to return someday.

Yes this truly is a fantastic garden and everything seems in good condition and with many well established large trees around the perimeters, it has good wind protection. Also being right on the equator it probably deso not experience bad cyclones and has constant humidity. In fact the whole city (what we saw) was very well landscaped with avenues miles long of Royal palms and large groups of Bismarckia and Lipstick palms all over.

We stayed at the Pan Pacific which was about 20 minutes or $6 Singapore dollars from the gardens. Next time we will stay closer so as to spend more time there.

It is a great city for food. All kinds as many cultures are found there.

However more than 80% Chinese meant that we could not find any entertaqinment to our liking as everybar had locals trying to sing karakoe to really dated tunes.

This palm is Iguana wallichiana.
