Rusty on Pine Is.

Hi everyone….not that it takes much, but this palm has me stumped.

It was a gift abt 2 years ago..the folks had originally got it as a thank you gift for joining Fairchild, I think, and it was labeled as A. vestiaria….well since then I have put an A.catechu in the ground, and the leaves aren’t anywhere near similar.

The petioles are a reddish brown, if that is any help.

Any ideas????

Ken, Jerry- thanks allot for the help...what had me scratching my head were the 'chocolate' petioles.

This is great news, since i've always intended to get a cabadae but never quite got around to it.....

Thanks again,

Hi Dave…….Pine island is on the SW coast of FL, abt two hours or so on the interstate south Tampa….more people are familiar with Sanibel and Captiva, but P I is the larger and inner barrier island on the Lee County coast.

Not much to say abt the garden….”Jackass Flatts” was a barren lot when I bought it in ‘00, (save for a mobile home), so my efforts have been to fill it, sometimes with the more vernacular palms, mostly a yawn compared to what I hear about here on the Board…..but there is always more space to fill, and always more plants to chose from.

…so many palms, so little $........

ROPI:

Sounds like you're in a paradise, at least when there's no hurricanes.

What vernacular palms are you growing?  I've got LOTS of Archontophoenix . . ..

Hey guys, I decided to do some drawings to clear up the whereabouts of SW Florida. I used the map that centered Boca Grande on my old post - this is marked in the middle with a red star. Pine Island is obviously circled - north of Sanibel, and west of Ft. Myers. ME is where I live - Venice. The Black X northeast of me is where Old Miakka is, for those who have asked. The J just to the west of Port Charlotte is where Jeff Wilson lives - where has he been recently?  ???

Christian...hey, nice map...you forgot to show Ray's moving van on I-75 heading south....a bit premature, maybe......

Ray, the island  got smacked by the eye wall of Charley, i lost 1/2 of my place, but most of the damge was to mobiles like mine and roofs, mainly just the covings......north end of the island got smacked pretty hard.....Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte got the worse of it.

The nurserys on the south side did pretty well, but the plantings on the north end were pretty hammered....those fields have been clear and replanted.

I was packed and loaded to move here permanently (been a snow bird up to that point) when the storm hit on the 13th.....i was making settlement on my house in MD, was given the option to back out by the buyer, and moved down anyway....best descision of my lfe

Hi Rusty, I live 2 miles from Sanibel ( a close boat ride away ) and I was wondering if your variegated Sable seeds out yet ? I sure would love to get my hands on a few seeds :P    I make alot of trips down south (Miami) to get trees, so if there is anything your looking for just give a shout and I could grab it for ya on one of my trips.

Hi Derek……the sabal does have two inflorescences, but they look pretty meager…despite that, you are welcome to some portion of what is there-  PM me with your snail address….maybe I will post a pic of the palm later on…I’m just happy it made the move and didn’t go belly up!  This is the biggest palm I have planted by hand, at about 12ft of CT.

I have a community pot of seedlings from another variegated Sabal moved at the same time, and none of the seedlings show any yellow in them…..but is that the case when they are young?

I remember reading that they showed it early on, but I may be mistaken…any ideas?

Rusty -

We have been thinking of buing a lot on pine island at least .5 acre-1 acre, any advice? North end preferable to south end, any problems with saltwater intrusion ins wells etc. I heard that they made some changes to zoning to keep it somewhat rural.

Tropica1 1……the north end of the island is the best growing area because of the ameliorating effects of Charlotte Harbor….i live in the middle where Little Pine Island sits to the east, so it may get colder……

..As to wells, I have a shallow one that I dug, and the water is ‘skunkey’, so I use it to top off my pond and emergencies..havent killed anything yet….I would imagine a fairly deep well would be needed.

Sent you a PM on the other info……

David….i will try to post a pic of the palm later sometime, although it was transplanted in early winter and the crown is still underwhelming….

…and these variegated S.palmettos, where not common, are not all that rare…..another contributor to the board, (Rob Pittman, I think), has 5……. and there are others.

It’s special enough to me, tho, that I planted it in a prominent spot.
