Huntington Butyagrus Offspring Update

Gtlevine

Recommended Posts

I have mentioned before that my favorite palm is the Huntington's Butyagrus hybridized by Merril. I have two vigorous offspring that were germinated in 1998 that came from the Huntington Palm. Changes have been taking place as these two palms mature and they now look like totally different, unrelated palms. The first looks more typical of pure Butyagrus, the second is starting to look like a massive, open crowned Butyagrus x Butia, but I have no idea for sure. Take a look at the photo's and see how different these palms have become, just amazing to me.

Wow Gary. They do look different. I wonder if that one Jubaea seed I collected there at the Huntington will have something else in it. It will take a while to find out, but I am willing to wait that long.

Yeah, since they're siblings more of less, that suggests that the mule can reproduce.

And I always thought they couldn't.

Well, I stand corrected in my [red] orthopedic shoes . . . . !

Just as an experiment, save the seeds on hybrid tomatoes or corn.  The babies revert to type, and the diversity is incredible.

Gary, Both are nice looking offspring of the Huntington xButyagrus. The first photo is my favorite. That is going to be a monsterous tree as an adult. Even as a juvenile the trunk is thick with a very dense crown. I can hardly wait to see this one in about another 3 or 4 years. Nice additions to your palm oasis. Tim Hopper
