Great Sabal selection.  Do you have any other types of palms?  Can we see the cycads?

Wow.  What a collection!

I figured I'd see some Brahea, Phoenix, Trithrinax up there in your desert garden.  I'm surprised that the Sabals, Trachycarpus, Livistona, etc do well for you since they're water lovers.  Awesome job!

Oh, and Allagoptera!  I have a couple seedlings that will take forever to reach any size, it's one of my favorite palms.  Very cool that you're growing it in the desert.

Amazing collection, So many sabals! It's almost as if you own every type of them :floor: I can't wait for my cycads to get big enough to even have more cycads.

Truly impressive for what must be a challenging environment! My favorite is that Trithrinax Campestris with the haircut…looks perfectly suited for your environment and the color is fantastic…does it tend to be windy there? If so, that would probably be one of the bigger challenges…really nice collection @Jubea_James760

@GregVirginia7, thanks you! It is pretty windy at times here. Typical everything seems to do well for the most part. The cages are to prevent my rabidus dogs from digging around my palms. Other than them being the most problematic gophers come in second.

Definitely. Surprisingly some of my Minors are keeping pace with some of the trunking Sabals I have. Most of my Sabals planted last year are still moving slow,  Birmingham, Roseii, Mexicana & Cherokee Minor as well as my Uresana. I don't have my notebooks with me but I think the Uresana is on its 4th year in the ground. I'll be happy if I can get 4 leaves from my Uresana this year but with each new leave its looking beefier!

Nice Collection for Zone 8b. The Brahea Armata's blue is incredible in a arid climate. I lost a Brahea "Super Silver" to 4F that was about that blue in humid southeast Texas. It kept that blue powder look that Armata lost in rain. I miss it. How long have you had a Sabal Mexicana in the ground? Mine are very fast, fast as a Washingtonia Filifera.

Looking great James!  :greenthumb:  Your Brahea edulis continues to grow pretty fast!  I think your L. nitida is about to blast off too - particularly if you can keep it well watered.  Your C. prunifera is just about the same size as mine but can't decide which of ours is bluer.  Did you get yours from Kevin Weaver?  I got mine from Joe Dombrowsky in May 2021 and it was pretty green at the time.  I lost a green variety in Palmageddon but I prefer the blue.  I think it's planted too close to the wall there though...

I have a blue cycad seedling (Encephalartos lehmannii) with 4 or 5 leaves roughly the size of your E. cerinus.  I haven't put it in the ground yet thinking that it needed to be bigger - have you had any issues planting them at that size?  Should I go ahead and plant mine?

Thanks Ryan!

I've only had the Mexicana in the ground 2 months. But i replaced it with my previous Mexicana I losted. I had that one almost a year in the ground but winter killed it. Actually it was more my negligence. I dropped the pot on the ground causing it to dislodge from inside the pot which caused more disturbance than I thought. So it's on me.

Thanks Jon! Yes, Prunifera is from Kevin. I left a foot radius from the wall  I hope that's OK :bemused:. Every picture I've seen shows skinny trunks & I've actually only seen 1 in person & the trunk was really small. Do you know if they dig up well?

i haven't had any issues planting them small like that. I'd plant it out if i were you! :greenthumb:

Absolutely.. I'm really very much overdue for an update to my entire property, but letting things grow.  It's been like living in a blast furnace this summer compared to mild last year with a lot of rain, but I have been watering like crazy and I have some really impressive growth everywhere.  The pictures will be quite dramatic from the ones I posted in the spring.  Really appreciate the things you were able to send a few months ago.

Now if only I could find a JxB for sale to add... I have a spot sitting, waiting for me to find one.

That is an awesome collection.. really love the Sabals.. and that Jubaea is getting huge! You did a great job with your selections.  Many of those palms I'd like to try here in my high desert...  I'm colder in winter..2000 feet higher I think.. but due to our higher elevations we have similar freak snow events..  I dont think you will have any problems with those palms at all!  I can't wait for future updates..

Supposedly they transplant well as apposed to the Caribbean Copernicias which do not.  I dug up my blue Copernicia alba in April and got a pretty good rootball but it hasn't pushed any growth yet so not sure if it'll make it.  No luck with the B. edulis seeds yet - I think I will try to "expose the embryo" on some and see if they respond.

Thanks man! I would love to see a Trithrinax Campestris tried in ABQ! Might be a bit of a zone push but I think it's worth a shot. My mind I'd still blown on the size of your Jubaea xButia hybrid! Truly remarkable.

It grows pretty fast. Once it started to sucker I noticed less leaves on the main trunk but it's still fast. It has 4 trunks/stems now. This was in late June of 2019.

Phoenix Acaulis,  just over 7ft. high. Love the color on it. Flowered last year for me but not this year. Wicked sharp thorns going different directions, it's really hard to prune.

Livistona Austrailis, starting to grow finally! I figured out what was causing this one's issues. The plant behind it ( lavender?) Is choking out the Australis with its roots.

I have a P acaulis also and it is growing in shade.  Doing wonderfully.  Don't know why this isn't more popular in the desert.

@ahosey01, for real. I left my unprotected this past winter & it handled it like a champ. No damage.
