Cicada Season = The best time of the year. Wish we had more species that sang into the night here.

If there wasn't one on my door while I was trying to sleep, I'd agree.

Katydids are much worse.

Start feeding nuisance cicadas to Sancho.

I was gonna make a comment along the lines of *if they taste like chicken," but y'all have seen Sancho. If it doesn't run he'll eat it.

Cicadas are a delicacy in the animal world, but I will not be eating them.

That' s just part of nature.. Better than waking up to a bat - in the house..  Also, just part of nature.

There's a whole forest for them to go to about 4 freeway exits south of me :floor:

Yea, lol.. Doesn't work like that.  Critters hang out where they please..  Only humans believe in boundaries..  :winkie:

We've had a Coyote roaming the neighborhood the last couple weeks.. Hopefully doing it's part to put fear into the unwelcome Cat herd.. Tempted to name it ( the Coyote ) " Alf ",  haha.

You still have time to edit "haha" to "Ha!" Lol.

And I get it. I'm in a small city surrounded by forest that somehow always smells like a mix of Olive Garden and Panda Express. But when the combination of my job and my anxiety has me sleeping 2-3 hours a night I don't want a screaming horny bug in my door sill. I just want to sleep surrounded by my 40 plants, none of which occurs here in nature :floor:

Wait till the mourning doves move into the patio squad and begin loudly cooing at 4AM.

The birds get Sancho all riled up, too. He hates them.

Literally just stopped him from bringing a cicada into the apartment. With bugs, he doesn't want to eat them. He wants to play with them and torture them.

This was fine with mole crickets when we lived in a house with a yard, but not so much now.

A cicada flopped into my lap while I typed this, and I thought they only showed up every 7 years.

Before February 2021, I had a rose bush outside my window. The mourning dove would roost there for the night and start cooing at about 4AM. The thing is the bush was only about 10 feet from my bed.

Of course the roosters go off at about 4:30AM, but they are a good 70 feet away.

I have no idea what kind of birds these are that start their 4am crap here. All I know is my alarm goes off at 7:15, I barely sleep due to stress and anxiety, and it's really aggravating when Sancho pops up and starts kicking the blankets off of both of us to stare at the window.

Naturally, as soon as I start to fall back to sleep, he burrows under the covers again and kicks me in his sleep until my alarm goes off.

Still love him though.

Depends on the species.. Some are periodical ( 13, 17 year ), others annual / bi- annual.. There are at least 170 species north of Mexico.  75+ sp. here in AZ alone.  Wish we had more.

Lol.. You'd hate my neighborhood.. Lots of traffic on our street, inc. first responder activity to and from the hospital, fire station around the corner .. Helicopters running between the hospital and others across the valley on and off through the  day/ night..  Have neighbors from Mexico / Central America whose get - togethers can last until midnight or 2 am.. and often include booking professional Mariachi bands.. which provides a nice background while working on something in the yard on warm evenings this time of year..  Hopefully everyone will have the fireworks going tonight..

That's on top of the birds, bugs, etc..

Sleep w/ a fan going, and have never really been a light sleeper anyway..  Cats are the only thing that have awaken me at 3 am  ...And they're lucky i didn't have a slingshot at that time.

Only thing missing here is falling asleep to the sound of rain falling on a metal roof / choruses of frogs / other night callers after a good storm..  love it.

I lived in Houston for 11 years lol. Close to a freeway and IAH airport. Blocks from a fire department. It took me about a year to get used to the relative quiet here.

In reality, the sounds of nature are just creatures trying to get laid or bragging about just getting laid.

Most of the bird songs would be quite explicit.:D
