During our warm humid summers we get lots of wildlife at our home in rural eastern Oklahoma. Our 5 acres are mostly wooded and we see lots of deer, gray foxes, racoons, opossums, turkeys, as well as an occasional eagle. With all of the large and small creatures in our woods, we have a few that seem to like palms almost as much as I do.

Like praying mantis:

Nice! We have two cats, so birds and squirrels usually stay outside of our immediate yard area. I even installed a small water feature in the yard for the wildlife, and we rarely see anything smaller than crows that are brave enough to come into the cat territory for a drink.

the other day i was repotting a palm and a black widow crawled out of the pot! Luckly, it ran off before it could bite me!

I have found black widows in and around my pots too. Not a fun feeling when you realize how close your fingers were to venomous spiders.

In the winter, anoles and geckos used to hide in the dead leaf bases of my livistona, but I cut it down so not anymore

Grasshoppers. Damn grasshoppers. Lol

I find grasshoppers on my palms occasionally, but they don't seem to bother them much at all. We have some pretty mean grasshoppers too. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it, but last summer I found a grasshopper eating one of our window screens. I watched it for a minute to be sure it was actually eating it. It ate a hole about 1 and half inches in diameter out of the screen before I took care of the problem.

The only but I’ve seen around my palms are grasshoppers, but only on my Washingtonians, well I do see other small bugs but I have no idea what they are, just various bugs.

not too many critters around my place, we had a possum that came around sometimes, had a turtle that lived in a hole in the backyard, seen a armadillo in the yard once but that’s it. Lots of aggressive fire ants, i left my fabric water hose sitting on an anthill and they are through it.

We have lots of lizards around our place, but no geckos or anoles in my neck of the woods. Our lizards don't seem to do a lot of climbing. I only ever see them on the ground.

Pretty cool to see one blending right in with palm fronds.

Be glad neither of you live here in AZ, haha ..Monsoon Season is prime time Black ( ..and Brown.. ) Widow season..  Have neighbors that collect a lot of junk ( which attracts more + the flying Cockroaches that area already quite common here ) and make it a nightly mission to patrol for baby widows with Reptile feeding tongs.. or a lighter, lol.

Fyi, Babies are easy to ID and kill once you've familiarized yourself w/ what to look for..

Is the only spider that isn't allowed to hang out up near the house or where ever people or my dog regularly accesses.  Also lucky to be among one of those neighborhoods in the area that does not have Bark Scorpions..   Somewhat of a tie as to which will hurt worse if bitten / stung by ( ...since Scorps. don't bite ).

Damn squirrels! I had one with a desire to chew the underside center of the petiole rib right where it archs away from the trunk, thus causing the whole frond to collapse at that nicely formed weak spot…this morning I noticed a fox used one of my low hanging Brazoria fronds as floss…don’t get me wrong, I love the critters…I feed the birds regularly which, of course, always includes the squirrels but honestly, of all the things a squirrel could come up with to destroy something…anyway, I haven’t noticed any petiole damage lately so maybe the Fox that flossed it’s teeth on my Brazoria frond made a meal of it at some point…:lol2:

Ive seen spiders in pots, ive seen lizards and tree frogs on both my potted and in ground palms. Something has been eating the leaves of my washingtonia seedlings, and after reading this thread its probably grasshoppers. Otherwise, the absolute worst is the squirrels. They like to dig holes in the soil of my pots. Ill go outside and find several 2-4" deep holes in the soil. Luckily they have never exposed any roots.

Lubber grasshoppers love to hide in the Phoenix plams, i guess they think that I can't reach them hiding in the spiky fronds.  They are wrong.  Otherwise it is mostly hordes of lizards.

Mostly small tree frogs on S.minor. an occasional stinging saddleback. Once had a Robin's nest in the costa of a palmetto.

I noticed that rabbits eat Trachycarpus seedlings but don't like S.minor.

I have a pair of Spotted Towhees that live year round in my yard. Last year they used one of my large Sabals horizontal fronds as a platform for a nest. They have a big personality so I was happy to help out.

Hardly any of those green anoles left in these parts, at least around the house they've all been replaced by the brown anole from Cuba, get away from town or in more wild areas and I still notice the green.

Sooo many visitors and inhabitants. Here's a few I've gotten pics of. Mostly spiders, snakes, lizards, and frogs. I've also had bears eating the pindo fruit, possums living in my French drains, feral cats doing who the hell knows what, and the list goes on...

Haha they're much more docile than you'd think. Aside from accidentally stepping on one you really gotta piss them off to get bit. I kept him around long enough to get some pics but even after moving him around a number of times he just kept trying to get away. I think he realized he wasn't going anywhere which is why he's hunkered down in the pic I posted

How does it not give you the chills, that gives me chills!?!? :bemused:

a couple weeks ago we had our house sprayed and I walked into the bathroom and I'm assuming the bugs were on the run from the chemicals, but I went in their unknowing that several spiders had set up home across my bathroom with a big web and I walked into it all, I wasn't home all day, so they just had all day to build it and I turned my bathroom fan on and a big spider fell from the ceiling! :bemused:

I do think jumping spiders are cool but I won't be touching any :floor:

Haha! Interesting. He realized you weren't a threat. I had some co-workers say that Cottonmouths are actually the most dangerous. I can still hear him with his country twang saying that one "chased him and his son for about 100 yards" lol
