Below it looks like some of  Gary Hollar's mature Palmetto " Fat Boys "  that Gary sells at his nursery .

It boggles my mind that this is less than two hours from my house and looks so different.

It’s crazy huh. I thought the same when I was staying in Ruidoso, New Mexico. It’s surrounded by forests and is a popular winter destination for skiing. 1 hour south in Alamogordo and there are robustas all over the place. Two totally different environments and scenery in a short drive.

That last picture looks like something you might see well into Florida .

The quote "fat boy" Inflorescence in second picture appear to be  within the leaf canopy which is what Texas Sabals do. Palmetto would extend further out like picture above it you can see.

I was thinking those  Sabals in the last picture  were  variants  like these in the picture below  at Gary Hollar's place , but they do look a lot like Texas Sabals .

And that is easier for me to understand because of significant elevation changes in New Mexico. But we don't have that here. Its only distance from the ocean.

I’ve skied tuckermans ravine a few times in my younger years. Quite the hike up. Thanks for the pic.

I haven’t been around enough Texas Sabal/ mexicana. Is that what those are? Definitely grow there no problem. Nearly native has them planted all over their place and they’re 7b in Fayetteville, GA

I skied it once and embarrassingly crashed from near the top of the ravine to the bottom . I didn't try it again  ; at least I didn't get hurt . I skied a lot at Waterville Valley  ski resort near thee .

The fun part of the Mt Washington trip was skiing all the way back to the parking lot from the bottom  of the ravines . It had to be close to half a mile of skiing , and it was well into April  .

Yep I’ve skied Waterville valley. I have family that used to ski patrol there. I actually did the majority of my skiing in Maine when I was younger. Don’t get around to it too much anymore, it’s become so expensive over the past 15 years or so. I’d like to hit western NC one of these days and give it a whirl.

I went to high school at Holderness School and my chosen sport was recreational skiing . We skied at Waterville Valley 4 times a week in the winter .
