My calendar said today 1yr ago I planted out my Bismarckia in my front yard so I thought I’d post an update. Sorry the trunk is not visable but you get the idea. These seem to grow really well for us out here on the left Coast.  I’m confident you FL peeps will post growth rate pics that put us to shame but it’s greatly appreciated non the less. Let’s see em….

Slow but relatively happy for me here at 38S. I’m honestly not desperate for it to become a monster quickly as it’s in pretty tight with surrounding palms. This one has been in the ground for 2.5 years now and was about half the size when planted.

Here’s some i sprouted late last year .  Got about 30

of these color is amazing on these . Can’t wait to plant a couple of these . And watch them grow from seed here in the garden . My bigger one was a small 5 gallon about 4 years ago Love the speed of these guys . Kind of wish everything grew this fast . But then again what would be the fun .

Bismarcks should be much more common up here in Northern California. I have just this one shade grown one but, if I had the room. I’d have one in a sunnier position.

Here's mine from a few months ago.   Planted around 2002, so 20 years worth right there!

This was put in the ground March of last year. It grew about a 12-18" last year. I expect another 1 or 2 feet this summer as well. It's already got 3 new spears pushing and we have been in our early summer drought. When the consistent daily rain starts at the end of the month I expect it to take off again.

I actually really like hiding the base of trunks sometimes. I usually use bromeliads or coleus. I forget the name of the ground cover you chose but I have some myself as does as another famous palm house (covering the majority of the front yard) here in town. Contrasting the bismarckias color with red and yellow is my favorite. Great work, Dale.

Can’t remember the name either. My neighbor was throwing away a ton of stuff and gave me 4-5 little sticks. Threw them in the ground in late JAN I think. They have since spread quite a bit. The wife loves them of course. Thanks by the way. :greenthumb:

@Billeb Forgot to ask...at what size did you acquire the bismarckia? Looks like it was pretty solid. 20g?

it was a good size. There are similar sizes at HD right now all over SoCal for $299 I think.  I didn’t get mine there but it was from a huge chain nursery that’s is in many states so I’m confident it is a FL grown specimen. Somebody gave me a gift cert. basically so I went there and swindled him way down to $250 I believe if my memory serves.

….. Speaking of palm races, is that the tuckeri in that first photo?

The palm in front of my Bismarckia is a Bentinkia Condapanna I got as a 1G and planted out probably 3months ago. I was told to protect it from wind so I thought in front of the silver tree would work best. The Tuckeri in question is behind me, it’s there but hard to see.

That’s Iresine herbstii . I have a lot of it in my garden as well. It’s a robust grower.

Here’s mine, been in the ground for about 14-15 years. Just started to skin it recently but didn’t want to go too high with it due to sunburn here in Phoenix.  I am planning on moving it to our new property in a few years (yes I know).

Also some seedlings I’ve been growing for 2 years now that will be a part of the new landscape at our new property.

The first picture is one I planted for a customer of my landscaping business. Mine belong to my nursery technically they’re all for sale but if one happens to have a terrible time selling I may have to keep it :D

I got them on eBay from a gentleman in Florida. The first batch I received were bare seeds and had a bunch of them that germinated in the shipping box but none of those made it due to root tip breakage, I did have another 25 or so that germinated under my care and that is what you see in the photo. The second batch I got several months later looked to be relatively fresh because they still had fruit on them. I ended up with 18 more successfully germinating and made it to the first leaf before winter arrived. All grown in 4x14 tree pots.

I tell you what, there isn't a smell quite like rotting fruit from a Bismarckia seed, it is nasty and doesn't wash off of your hands easily at all. Even washing my hands in bleach did not remove the smell.  I have contacted the same person who I got the seeds from previously and he says I am first on his list when they begin to fall from the tree. They aren't quite ready yet though. I have latex gloves this time LOL.

this one is a volunteer that I am allowing to establish about 10-12' from the mother tree(30').  It has always had this intense color.  This mother's volunteers are very purple but this one is among the most purple.  The heavy purple color has been associated (anecdotally) with the most white bismarckias.   This one is apparently throwing its first fully divided leaf.  It has take a beating no doubt but it seems like its rooted now.IMG_8648.thumb.JPG.5819256cfbe9376084dd9aa8f1fbed15.JPG

free seed if you help clean up the mess the mother makes annually.  And yes if they sit they stink to high heaven.

Below are my two Bismarckia Nobilis planted in ground. They were planted as 15 G last year at the end of May,  May 28th the right one and May 29th the left one.

I don't know what is happening with the left one, I think it was grown in shade, because the length of its new petioles that it is growing are smaller than the ones it came with. It has grown probably six or seven new leaves last year, I think one less compared to the right one.

Until now, both of them have opened a new leaf this year. The right one is about to open a new one probably this week.

These are really like the climate here and grow really fast.

First one is May 2015 compared to today so guess 7 years of growth from whatever size you’d call the first picture. You can see the growth of the D. lutescens as a bonus as well.

I don't know what you are all doing to your Bizzies, but they grow as in the Story of Jack and the Beanstalk. :) I have already fed mine two times this year and I am preparing to feed them the third time with Palmgain but... I don't see growth as you all do. Maybe it's my damn clay soil, maybe ... I have no idea what else.

Encouraging to see other nearby palms as I plan to add at least one more palm to the backyard area where my Bismarckia is. How much space is that between the bismarckia and the lutescens?

13 feet from center of the D. lutescens and the center of the Bismarckia.

I've got 9'6" between a small 15g bismarckia and a 6' tall chambeyronia macrocarpa. Hoping it's enough space and for the chambeyronia to outrun the little bizzie. Only time will tell...

Chambeyronia is slow for me so far. Here are some more measurements for you to work with to think about spacing. In first pic the left adonidia trunk is 13 feet from the center of the bismarckia. In the second pic the bismarckia and the royal are 16 feet apart.

Thanks, this helps a ton! I think it'll be a little close but since the chambeyronia is so far ahead of the bismarckia height wise, it'll be interesting to watch how it pans out. It may end up being ok. You have a great garden by the way! I love the grass, big croton, the selection of palms, as well as the spacing. Great work.

Thanks!
