Help - Sylvester Date Spear Pull

Recommended Posts

Hey Y'all,

I planted this Sylvester back in March. There was one slight freeze after planting (32F). About a month ago the middle fronds (spear) pulled. I used copper fungicide and hydrogen peroxide. Still no new growth. I don't really water it, but decided to today as the soil was dry down about 4 inches. Any thoughts on what to do, if anything? Was going to wait until fall to finally call it. Thanks!

Looks like it's dying and I would pull it and put it in a pot in the shade in the back yard to see if you can survive. When I have little palms like that and the spear comes out they either die really slowly or if they recover they take a really long time to turn around and the growth is slow.

When you pull it if its all rioted around the roots its done.

Ok thanks! Maybe I will do that. I want to get a replacement palm in there while there's still a bunch of warm weather ahead.

I would feed and water it and avoid getting water in the crown. Phoenix get spear easy from cold. if it is crown rot then its a gonner. I just had a pygmy date come back last week and now its coming on fast.

Quick update: transplanted to the backyard in some soil amended with sand and it started pushing new growth! Kinda shocked. Thought it was toast.
