hydriastele beguinii OBI Island palm 1 gal size

3 Milesfrom Gulf of Mexico

Recommended Posts

Scored a rare palm today in St.Pete.  1 gallon hydriastele beguinii OBI Island.  Going to transplant into larger pot.  I have two bags of fox farm soil.   Should I plant the palm in Happy frog or ocean forest blend soil?  Will be in heavy shade under 30 year old oak tree.  Will move into garage when we get 35 degrees in January.

I wouldn't sweat the decision too much. I have several planted in my yard in sand with little organic material and they have done very well.

Nice score , would love to have myself. As far as what soil to use, I personally never use potting soil. Especially if you plan on having it potted for awhile. If you have had good experience with that brand on other palms then go for it =)

Kicking myself for not buying these when they were 2 for $35 on ebay last year. As far as soil goes, i am by no means qualified to answer but i'd 50/50 mix the 2 for drainage. Again, I'm a palm idiot

Ah, nice find. I saw 4ft ones potted in Naples FL  Botanical Gardens and ever since have wanted one.  Just ordered seedlings from Hawaii.  Do they need a very well draining soil in pots, like added leca  clay pellets or large perlite chunks?  Was wondering if similar in care to Verschaffeltia.

It needs a very well draining soil. Pure potting soil probably won't do. Refer to @piping plovers' post. I've started adding reconstituted coco coir to my mix.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.
