Watering Palms

I'm just curious to know is it ok to water palms on the leaves, Like using a shower setting on the hoes and spraying the plants and soil because when I water my palms I always try and be super careful and only wet the soil and it takes sooooooo long to water each and every palm because I can't just water them altogether at the same time.

If theirs a better solution to watering I'm all ears

I spray the leaves top and bottom and even the stem all the time but its separate from soaking the soil. I would still soak the root zone. The thing to avoid I think is water getting down in the base of the crown or growth point. Especially daily automatic overhead watering it can cause rot.

How do you avoid getting water in the crown if water gets on the leaves and stuff? It seems to run straight into the crown unless your talking about bigger palms were the leaves arent straight up? I wish their was a quicker way to water the root zone quicker

I use one of those garden shower wands and I have a few of those adjustable force sprayers. Both work well.  The adjustable nozzle things have a few spray patterns and they have a dial to adjust the pressure. Should be at any garden center. Water will get into the crown just don’t get too much. I guess the problem you’re having is that the leaves are sticking over the edges of the pots? The wand can be maneuvered around if thats the case.

Thanks! I didnt know they had dials to control water pressure because I've been using a hand held sprayer but it doesn't have pressure control so thats good to know!

Does cold water matter when watering palms, I have well water and it comes out freezing which is why I use a watering can for all of them but would love to use the hoes for convience

Water temp I guess would depend on a few things. What palm, how cold is the water, how hot is it outside, day or night? etc. I’d say just use common sense. You can play it safe or take chances. If you take chances you might loose a few but you’ll also learn something from it. Maybe try watering a small group of palms using some different methods and if it works apply it to the rest of the collection.

I actually just got an idea that they sell sink attachments for hoses that I can attach to my laundry tub spout, which is near the backdoor, so I can have comfortable water temperature for my palms and I don't have to lose any or continue breaking my back using a watering can in combination with the shower wand. :D

As for my inground palms, I really want to figure out the best method for watering them, either with drip irrigation or something. I have no idea how to set that up across 2 palms that aren't next to each other.

I've literally thrown most of mine in the shower to get rid of spider mites or after repotting

Most of my palms are outside, but my house plants get watered can as usual unless I spot a pest. Two days ago, I discovered spider mites on my indoor banana, which I treated in the shower. The same goes for the coconut. I only feel safe giving my coconut cold hose water in the summer because I know the sun will warm it up quickly but as of now it gets a nice shower and spray under leaves.

It’s hooter than hell outside so water will evaporate just like rain does
