Sabal palmetto dying?

Will

Recommended Posts

Hi, I planted some Sabal palmettos 2 weeks ago. Now after 2 weeks they look really dried up.

Is that normal after transplanting? Will they make it?

Were these in pots or did you dig them?  They look pretty stretched out so maybe not acclimated to the location moved to?  All Sabal are root sensitive.

Sabals seem to absolutely cringe when their roots are messed with, and this is their way of showing it. I have also learned to never dig a young Sabal out of the ground. 2 Sabals ceased to exist after that.

I think if you keep the ground moist it should bounce back, I ripped 2 seedlings out of construction clay in a parking lot and it took a couple months but finally pushed through with new growth and I kept the soil moist at all times

Thanks! Yeah temps are also really going up. I have a good feeling 2 will come back. The completely dried out one is most likely dead but lets see.

I have been incredibly rough with Sabals of that size and had them live, often not skipping a beat. Although I usually cut off most of the old leaves so they don't lose any moisture unnecessarily via transpiration.

Those definitely don't look happy. If they don't make it DM me and I will make sure you have seeds, if not seedlings, depending on what is legal to ship abroad.

Thank you very much! I still hope they will make it.

I would have suggested you grow them in pots for at least a year before planting them. Even here in FL I grow up Sabals for at least 1-2 years before planting.

Seems like they coming back. Made that Mark like 2 weeks ago. When looking inside the growing point you can already see some healthy parts of the spear pushing.
