Will this King fatten up?

Hello all…

I got this 15G King for $40 from Blue Bell that I ended up putting in a large planter - it’s really tall for a 15G but also on the skinny side - will this fatten up as it grows? I’m used to seeing them thicker at this height.

thanks!

Jon

Yep. If you keep it well watered it will fatten up. I’ve seen many Archontophoenix come out of greenhouse conditions from nurseries looking like this. It still has the potential to get thick.

This little guy germinated in that there pot.

Full sun , a lot of water, it's super green.  Heck, it's the greenest palm I have on that wall.(South facing wall, exposed 24/7).

Not only do they need water , but sun as well.

Thanks for always jumping into my newbie posts Dale! I just planted this guy and the 2 larger Royals 2ish weeks ago but added no fertilizer - Would you advise some fertilizer already?

I’ve been giving them a solid hose soaking every other day but not a full planter saturation - how much is optimal?

Right now it’s in partial shade - I got another king from Blue Bell out in full sun and it’s got a bit of a sunburn.

If they were mine, I’d at least wait one cycle to fertilize. There’s tons of theories on how often to fertilize but I personally was using a 12-4-12 slow release so I’d fertilize every 3 months. Now I jumped on the PalmGain wagon and per the General Manager at BGI, she says to reapply every 6-8 weeks as PalmGain only has approx 30-40% slow release. Long answer….. I’d wait a couple months.

I’d bet others would say it’s ok to apply right now tho. I don’t think anyone is 100% correct.

Keep yours WET at all times and that will fatten. Probably not as fat as they would be in the ground. I have dozens of them. Here’s a photo of how fat they can get when happy. There’s my hand by it for reference. :)
