So many more dead snakes (adders, smooth snakes, grass snakes etc) and look at just how dry that grass is there. That's what 6 inches of rainfall in 6 months does.

There is just no end to the fires this year. I can't believe I am saying that in April. There's an active forest fire right now in Corwen, Wales. They have some rain forecast tonight though, which should help contain it. Different story for the southeast of England though, where rainfall can't really make it across. I doubt I will get any here tomorrow.

So April finishes on 4mm / 0.2 inches this year. Still slightly wetter than last April's 1mm / 0.05 inches, which was the driest on record here. Still exceptionally dry nonetheless. My last measurable rainfall was 24 days ago now. I had a 'trace' amount a few days back, but nothing to add to the rainfall total. It finishes on 4mm / 0.2 inches.

I am about to plant my tomatoes and pepper plants into a literal dustbowl here. It's like moon dust. I watered this bit of ground a few days ago, but you couldn't tell.

992634289_thumbnail_image0(86).thumb.jpg.06154c04653104869ba9ff0750a65443.jpg

Some parts of southeast England aren't going to get any rain still whatsoever. If I am lucky I may pick up 1-2mm here tomorrow, but we are into May now. The next 24 hours may be our only chance to get a bit of rainfall in. High pressure still looks incredibly dominant on the charts moving forward through May.

Not particularly warm, but definitely remaining on the dry side. I will post all the rainfall data for April once the Met Office releases it tomorrow.

I wouldn't really say that it is rainy during spring here, since April's have become excessively dry in recent years. Last April I only had 0.1 inches of rainfall vs 0.2 inches this April just gone. The April before that had 0.3 inches, so it is definitely trending drier during April and spring in general. May 2020 had 0.0 inches of rainfall here too. Springs are generally dry here, especially in recent years, however this particular spring is something else entirely since I am only on 0.49 inches for the entire spring so far.

Here's the Met Office official rainfall stats since November for the UK. Just insane for southern and eastern England. Almost semi-arid conditions ahead of what is predicted to be a hotter and drier summer than average too. That could cause all sorts of problems for agriculture, ecosystems and the wildfire risk. Worrying times ahead I think...

Every single month out of the past 6 has had below average rainfall here with only December having close to average rainfall. November, January and April were all very dry with just 0.2 inches or less each. Like abnormally low rainfall months compared to December and February. May is also following suit in the excessively dry category. The total for 2022 is only 4.94 inches and the total since November is 6.41 inches by my own records. That is going back just over 6 months now.

How dry does it have to be to do this to an olive tree as well...? The olive leaves are drying up and turning brown now. I literally have no water table here whatsoever and the soil is clay, so it is totally dry. I forgot to water the Queens (Syagrus Romanzoffiana) and the biggest one has really suffered this spring. I am hoping it isn't dead, but it doesn't look good. The smaller Queen has hung on and is still green & pushing a new spear, probably due to having lower water requirements. I should have irrigated them properly.

The Epiphytes are going to die back here...

Central England is just as dry as southern England almost…

A dry summer and we are in big trouble. I can see hosepipe bans coming in this month and water rationing by June. I went for a walk in my local woods today and it is exceptionally dry in there as well, despite the overhead cover from trees and the wetter more humid nature of forests. The winter mud has turned to sand on the forest floor.

This will certainly go down as a very dry spring and this may is shaping up to be very warm/dry (typical of a La Niña pattern) tho it has been dull so far which will limit fires and evaporation rates thankfully all eyes will be on next week to see if we bring some proper heat in potential their to get into the mid 20s

ECMWF has 28C forecast for London, but that model always understates UK summer temps close to the solstice. If that plays out, expect 31-32C in a few London/southeast spots. You know Heathrow will certainly exceed 30C under this setup. I would expect 28-29C here near Guildford. Not bad for mid-May at 51N. Also, I certainly wouldn't say it has been dull as sunshine hours are around average to slightly above for this spring here.

FSVzm9EWYAAna-a.jpg.e099a76b92b50e516b7898b23fd027d1.jpg

If this model verifies that is probably low 30's C in southeast England. 850 hPA temps in mid-May under clear skies probably equates to 31-32C for southwest London.

FSWAZZDXoAA3wfD.jpg.7f480fab4ea82cf8aab30d445f4a5550.jpg

BBC hasn't adjusted yet and is still forecasting mid 20's C, but that will almost certainly be upscaled in the coming days. What is evident is the dry theme. We are under full blown summer-Med conditions currently with the warm temps and precipitation block. That's not to say it will last though, but the start of summer will probably be the same - warm and excessively dry. The maximum for me here today was 22.9C / 73F. As soon as the heat ramps up, it will exacerbate the drought & fire situation. We could get a sprinkling of rain tomorrow, so hopefully I will add something to the 0.05 inches so far this May and the 0.49 inches so far this spring.

@Tyrone Is this signs of drought stress on the Eucalyptus on my street? It looks like the leaves are almost about to drop. They have dried out and turned crispy in the past week or so.

Agriculture is really struggling over here...

I planted my tomatoes out over the weekend. I had to plant straight into the dustbowl, although this ground has been watered daily since plant out. Not that you can tell. It's impossible to keep up with the irrigation demands at my garden and allotment. It is a dustbowl...

As what happened last week the models are backing off the hot weather for next week and seem to be turning unsettled with potential for heavy thundery rain I had a bit of rain this morning enough to green things up a bit.   let’s see what happens but the potential for 30+ heat seems to have diminished probably just make it into mid 20s which is standard may weather and while this spring has been sunny may so far hasn’t been overly great
