Cheap seedling protection setups?

So the rats and squirrels keep getting my seedlings.  I finally rigged up a setup with some stackable plastic shelving with some bird netting wrapped around it and it seemed to be enough of a deterrent but the friggin things got in there and tore everything up again.  They either chew the seedling off at the soil line or just yank it straight out of the dirt.  I'm probably moving in the next 6 months or so, so not looking for any permanent setup, I'd rather have something I can get rid of before I go so I don't have to move it.  I looked into propane tank cages laid down on its back but they are kind of pricey for a temp fix. Also considered dog crates but I think the holes in the mesh are too big.  Was wondering what others were using for protection?
