Yellowing of new growth

Marius

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I have a problem with some of my palms. New growth is a yellow or lime green colour and it doesn’t improve as the frond matures. Does anyone know what could be the cause?

We have had a very wet summer, but this only seems to affect some palms with others next to them being fine.

Any help / inputs will be much appreciated.

I thought that it might be a nitrogen shortage and have fed with nitrogen rich fertilizer twice already this season.

could be Fe deficiency, which is marked by chlorosis of new growth.  But it also could b you have multiple deficiencies, Fe just one of them.  If your soil is high pH or overwatered, Fe deficiency is common.  The plant doesn't need that much Fe, normally Fe deficiency is a pH or (over)watering problem.  understanding your soil drainage is needed to set watering interval.  I tested min for moisture/time after a watering to determine the best interval.  The time of year may also be important for watering interval if you have seasonal weather changes.  The pH problem if you do have one is more complex.  If you have really high clcium soils, you probably can't change it and will have to make du with what can grow well in that pH.  IF your soils are moderate in Ca, sulfur pellets(elemental) should be assed and workin into the top 2" soil.  DO this 2x a year with 2 handfulls per plant away from the trunk but in the rootzone area(within 2' for a small palm.  You may need to do this for 5-6 years and possibly thereafter intermittently.  Make sure you use sulfur pellets and work them in, they wont wash or blow away like a powder.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Thanks Sonoranfans. I will try the iron supplement tomorrow and see if it helps. If not the sulphur.

I appreciate your input.
