I'm sure you all know about the cold in Texas and the cold in the PNW but what about the winter here in the northeast it is one of the coldest winters I have every recorded! i mean we are going to get 8F on Saturday!

Yeah 8 in northern NJ is nowhere near the abysmal all time lows in the US. Even Texas did NOT get many if any all time lows, just long duration cold. The only places where they might have had an ''all time" low such as the low 20s on South Padre Island is due to those locations having a short weather history, just like Miami Beach with their missing January and February freezes due to the records there not going back to the 1895 1896 or 1913 freezes.

In February 2015 many parts of the northeast had a record cold month with the month average temp being below 20F all the way to near NYC where Long Island Sound had it's most recent freeze over. It was a polar vortex dip event with very high wind, so some lakes were resistant to freezing over despite the temps being well cold enough compared to other 100% freeze over years.

Newark and NYC both are both a Zone 7a, maybe 7b..., 8a/8b?...., NO WAY!   Zonal minimums are averaged over a 30 year period..., one or two years do not matter in the least . A minimum of 8.0F for Newark, still makes it a Zone 7b. If you cannot remember temperatures under 8 F. than you must be quite young.  These gardening zones are not arbitrary and they are useful and meaningful.  I have lived in the greater NYC/Newark area for some 60 plus years,  and have been an avid palm collector and weather enthusiast for most of those years.  This area is a solid Zone 7a/7b climate within the last update of the gardening zones.  If you want serious cold, head just north of the border, - 15.0 F.

That's a completely average winter low in Newark - don't take your parents word for it, just look it up!

I lived in NYC for years and we hit single digits every single year. I've also lived in Savannah GA which is a true solid 8B climate, winter there is absolute no comparison. Even Savannah had a record low of 3F in 1985 though.

NYC winters seem mild compared to the Midwest but single digit temps are so common that you won't even find long term Trachycarpus, the botanical gardens keep planting them and they keep dying. If 8F was the coldest winter New Jersey in decades, the beaches of Cape May up to the Long Island would be planted with millions of palmettos.

Is this updated for the 2021 Texas cold snap where a few locations might have had new all time lows, though many didn't.

I lived in Alexandria Va just north of Mt. Vernon for 14 years. We ran a disaster restoration cleaning company. Every year we saw and cleaned up multiple times after single digit lows froze water lines and busted pipes. One Christmas morning we woke up to -7F. All our storm windows were covered with frozen condensation on the insides. It was so cold I refused to let my young son go outdoors to visit a friend's house to show off presents.
