Hey All,

Haven’t had much to update since we have had a record warm December in the Midwest (Z6). Nothing is protected yet and likely won’t be for a few more weeks according to the forecast. Having them to look at through Christmas and going into January has been trippy for a lifelong midwesterner LOL.

Hope you enjoy. Everything is ready to be protected if I ever need to this winter!

Having the same kind of winter here! Some night lows down to 28F or so but way up over freezing by early morning. So far so good but I have a feeling that dip in the jet stream is inevitable...I’m ready to throw on some protection if I have to.

New Trachy F. added this past spring is caged and ready for lights and frost cloth...

Medi has its umbrella to help keep the crown dryer and a bed of lights underneath...will never wrap that thing in lights again! If need be, I’ll drape frost cloth over the umbrella to cover it. McCurtain in the lower left could care less.

Needle and Trachy are protection free...may get some lights up to the crown of the Trachy...the Needle is at home here but the Brazoria is a work in progress. I’ll do what I need to to help it out...the Trachy’s worst enemy isn’t the weather, it’s the squirrel. It chewed holes at the base of the underside of the petioles, thus causing them to collapse and lay parallel to the trunk...I cut off the affected fronds because, though still green, they looked terrible...I mean, of all the things to happen! I applied hot sauce to the remaining petiole bases and will work up a cayenne pepper spray I can apply as needed and look up grandma’s old squirrel pot pie recipe!

But if winter continues on the way it has so far, like it did last winter, it’ll be an easy task...wishing you a moderate winter and Happy New Year!

Those all are looking great! Hoping for a moderate or warm winter as well. Can't imagine the growth next season if winter keeps up like this!

Yes...for us here, it seems the worst of winter has moved to mid-January through mid-March...nothing to back it up data wise but experience seems to be moving colder temps more toward spring. Your palms are staked and ready but in the mean time they’ll see the weather. I think that’s how it’s supposed to work with cold hardy palms anyway. I’ll need some of that explosive growth on the squirrel ravaged Trachy...as you note, hopefully the winter will cooperate and speed that process along...I plan on a vigorous fertilizer routine this spring.

That's something I noticed the last handful of years while we were living in Ohio, we were mild pretty much all through December most years, winter seemed to take forever to arrive but once it got there man, it stayed forever. It stayed cold all through March, felt like it would never warm up.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

It took me a minute to figure out what was up with the very unusual trunk on the Chamaerops

Very true. January and February are the worst for lows. Next week looks good in the 50s so I’ll take every mild week the two months will give me!

Does Sabal minor and needle palm need protection there?

They may not this winter. The last time we had lows true to our zone was the 2014/15 winter. I wish I would’ve planted them the first year I got the house 3 years ago. Every winter has been mild since. *knocks on wood*

None in the seven or so years in the ground...I’d imagine a wave of single digits might get me moving to protect them but in all winters past, except for the first year in-ground for the needle, nothing at all...they’re perfect choices for my area. I have a few Sabal minors I started from seed that are 4-5 straps. They’ve been protection free...this is their 2nd or 3rd year in ground? but so far so good for them.
