Chamaerops humilis hardy outside

I saw a bunch of these for sale in my local hardware store(Wilkinsons) for  about 3.99. They have good size ones with mature leaves and thorns, and younger ones with less complex leaves. I'd buy  a smaller one and watch it grow, keep it outside during the summer, but would it live outdoors all year in zone 8/9?

Dear pohonkelopa,

the med.fan palms have be aprouted in fashion as to send them to garbage bin(Grave).

i want to know wheather such palms if replanted will it survive.

if i do it in india(hot climate) it will dry up gently and in just 1months time the crown shaft will drope down.

In my opnion i feel those med.fan palm were subject to very harsh treatment.

Please comment !

Love,

Kris.

Larry you shouldn't have a problem outside, especially in the ground.  They even survive outside in pots without a problem, although, if you plan on getting one of the smaller ones, you would be well advised to wait a year or two before leaving it exposed all winter.  The larger ones would probably be fine now, based on your description of their size.

IMG_0024.jpgHi Larry,

Here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, they do fine down to 0 F (-18 C). In fact, the picture below is of one that survived -5 F (-21 C).at the Albuquerque Zoo. Of course, we are warmer in the daytime in the winter and drier than you (closer to the natural habitat), so it does pretty well. Some winter burning.
