About 60 (15.5) at the beach, 70 (21) offshore. That's actually an improvement.

Off the coast it's 31C (88F). Along the coast because of the shallower water it's always warmer and varies more.

That is really warm water, Zig. This past week was very windy & cooled the local beach water temps to near 60F or lower for a while.

Looked up Palm Beach Inlet on this site for the last three years and found the following:

March 14, 2008-74F.

March 24, 2009-75F.

March 14, 2010-71F.

Not sure what to make of it?

I remember running down the beach to the water in Darwin, and if you were barefoot, your soles were cooked by the time you got to the water as the sand was so hot at low tide. Then when you got to the shallows, you realised that the water wasn't much cooler! I always used to wear thongs/flipflops etc to avoid the burn!

The waters along the Northern Territory coast are relatively shallow. And even for quite a distance offshore you don't get that 'oceanic depth', until you go off the edge of the Arafura Shelf, something like 300 kms away. The Bureau of Meteorology currently shows the reading to generally be 31C here although their chart has the red colour ramped up quiet dark indicating higher temps on their scale.

If you look at the CSIRO charts where you can check spots rather than broad areas, it spots from 31C to 34C. But in the waters adjacent to the beach it will get a lot hotter depending on the tides and time of day. Most fish are attuned to this, but now and again you can get fish kills from these very high temps. Looks like the fish might have their own "Darwin Awards".

There seems to be wide swings between ocean temps taken overnight compared to afternoon. At 3PM both Santa Monica Bay & San Diego Bay are recording 64F\ 17.7C but were at least 4 degrees cooler at 7AM. Are there similar variations at other locations?

You have to expect that in bays where the water is usually shallower than out to sea. Shallower water will cool down and warm up a lot quicker than deep water.

Here it's still 31C but with a cyclone wandering around nearby it could suck some of this heat out of the water.

Been puzzled recently by local ocean temp readings of relatively wide 24-hour swings [something not noticed in the past]. NWS_LA reports current\ 10.00AM water temp of 55F\ 12.7C for Santa Monica bay [the coldest reading all winter]. There is a cold airmass overhead & strong winds so upwelling may be particularly strong. NOAA site, however, is showing 61.3 at 1648 [uTC]. Wonder if there are 2 buoys for Santa Monica bay? Both NWS & NOAA report 62.2F\ 16.7C water temp for San Diego bay. :hmm: In any event cold water is the norm for several more months.

This should be the warmest water of the year since we are nearing the end of our "Summer". In the next month it should start cooling off a little.

Happ, maybe one is using the buoys and the other is using satellite data.

There always a lag between ocean temps and atmospheric temps. The warmest water is usually after the end of summer.

We're still over 31C (88F) but further to the east Tropical Cyclone Paul dropped the temps dramatically. Where the cyclone hovered along the coast a couple of days the water is down to around 27C (81F) now. Westwards the cyclones came very early in the season so the sea's re-heated . There's a vast area over 31C (88F) to the north west of Australia. If we get to the end of this month without a cyclone forming here then we should be okay.

The Gulf Of Mexico is now 89F off my coast. It is 90F in Tampa Bay. That is like bath water! That is what a month of hot, sunny weather will do for you. Back in March we were struggling to get into the 60's in the water....Makes for warm, humid, sticky nights. These temps usually bring coastal showers and storms but none so far this rainy season. One can hope! Greg
