Some southern Queensland palm gardens

Recommended Posts

Daryl

Hi everyone, I have had the fortune to see some awesome palm gardens lately, looking good after a very wet spring which is unusual for this area.  Photos aren't in any particular order, but these first few are from the garden of Will and Margaret Kraa...some of you may know them, but they have an impressive collection which has been thinned out a bit recently, which makes for better viewing IMO. This is in the suburbs of Brisbane.

Plenty of lovelies there...

Incredible collections, but that Marojejya darianii is unbelievable... A massive full crown of those gigantic leaves sitting on the top of such a tall trunk for a cultivated plant... total wow. Those three collections visited all in one day is a mind-blowing Palm related event. I hope there was enough time to fully explore each one. A fun opportunity for Palm overload, I would have been exhausted if there was a fourth garden...

(I can easily picture the framework for a Queensland, Australia-based Biennial incorporating these gardens.)

Thanks for the post Daryl, pretty exciting stuff. New gardens being created and revisiting older ones keeps this whole enterprise fresh and motivating. Good to see the Green brothers still at it too.

The fourth garden is that of Jon Williams...this is (apart from some older plantings of Chambeyronia, Foxtails and Leptocheilos) a very young garden full of understory palms. Many are still adjusting to the increased sun exposure but are really starting to come along, and this place will be stunning in a couple of years.

Hi Daryl,

thanks a lot for sharing, that's an amazing place :D ! I really enjoyed my stay in Brisbane some years ago..
Special mention for these two (the Mule palm & the Beccariophoenix) they are huge and very healthy.

Gotta get myself back to QLD. It’s been way too long between visits.
