PSSC November 20, 2021 meeting in EL CAJON, SAN DIEGO COUNTY

Hello, everyone!

I'm very pleased to announce that the PSSC's next meeting will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the home and garden of Gregg and Debbie Hamann at 11123 Valley Lights Drive, El Cajon CA 92020, in San Diego County.

Ever dream about a palm garden on a really large piece of ground, like more than an acre? In a perfect or near perfect palm climate, on a high hill? With a sweeping driveway, lined with gorgeous mature palms? Imagine a live-in botanical garden! Now you don't have to imagine, you can see for yourself. Gasp-inducing vistas from every vantage point.

Mr. Hamann inherited the house and garden from his father, and he has made the absolute most of it. Dotted with natural rock outcroppings, the Hamann garden is filled with mature specimens of many rare palms, including (but in no way limited to) Dypsis madagascarensis towering overhead, Cyphophoenix elegans, towering overhead, plus Gastrococos, Dypsis onilahensis, Cocothrinax, Braheas, Syagrus, Pritchardtias, all towering overhead. And, right out front, a Chambeyronia hookeri "watermelon" type, towering overhead. And, there's understory ankle biters, too, so you can take a rest from gawking overhead. Plus coning Encephalartos, and Dioons for the cycad fanciers. Plus, numerous newer palms that have caught our hosts' fancies and planted more recently.

The last time we were here was in 2017, and this garden has only gotten better.

So, please join us! Bring a friend!

NOTE ON APPAREL

El Cajon is about 8 miles inland from the ocean and it can get a good deal hotter than coastal San Diego. Also, this garden is on a slope with paths and numerous steps - appropriate clothing and "sensible shoes" (no high heels) are strongly advised.

POTLUCK LUNCH

We'll be having a potluck lunch with fried chicken provided. Bring your favorite dish to share. Meat, vegetables, dessert, or any combination. Make yourself, or buy and bring it - if you like it, we will too! If it's grandma's favorite recipe, so much the better. We don't care if your grandma was from Stuttgart, Sri Lanka or Cincinnati. Come feast on food, and the joint joys of palms and good fellowship on a glorious fall day.

AUCTION

There will be an auction at this meeting. Donors have a choice of donating 100% of the proceeds to the PSSC (we appreciate that!) or 50% (we appreciate that, too!) The focus is on rare palms, in 1 to 5 gallon containers, though larger ones will be accepted. Also good are nice palm-themed objects d'art, and other exotic plants, including but not limited to, bromeliads, fancy Ficus, etc. We accept credit cards, checks, and good old cash, though, due to expenses relating to credit card transactions, we greatly appreciate cash and checks, if possible.

As everyone is aware, the Covid 19 pandemic, and the forced closures of group events has hurt the PSSC's finances badly as the auction is a vital source of funding for the PSSC. The recent "re-start" auctions have helped a great deal, but more is needed; your participation by donating and buying will help immensely. If you have a question about a possible donation, contact Dave Bleistein at 323-481-5071 via text or email at urkurk2000@gmail.com

Since we have a limited time in which to conduct the auction, we ask that donors provide plants that will realistically sell for at least $20. Please no Washingtonias, Phoenix canariensis, etc. We also appreciate liners and "freebie" plants as well for the plant raffle.

Thanks to all of our donors!

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

In keeping with guidance by the U.S. CDC, the State of California, and the County of San Diego, face masks are NOT REQUIRED outdoors for those who have been fully vaccinated against Covid 19. Masks are recommended for the unvaccinated, and indoors. As in previous meetings, masking protocols will be on the honor system. Those who wish to "mask up" voluntarily are absolutely welcome, but not required, to do so.

I'm definitely excited for this one! Gregg's garden was the first garden and first PSSC meeting I ever attended.

So, who's coming?

Who's ready to worship the Amazing Watermelon Chambeyronia hookeri?
