Oviedo_z10b_lol 199 Report post Posted October 14, 2021 My A. Alexandrae puts out better color than my C. Macrocarpa. Which is to say, it puts out any color at all with the new leaf.
sonoranfans 2,855 Report post Posted October 14, 2021 the ones that throw red new leaves are obvious when they are small. The avoid this problem you should buy one when its throwing a new leaf in a 5-7 gallon size. I have bought two C. marcocarpa from the internet, sight unseen, both have a nice rose/red color though the "macrocarpa" is less vibrant in color than the "macrocarpa var watermelon". C. Hookeri us supposed to be more consistently red color, very few green ones. I have two 7 gallon hookeri I got earlier this year, the first one was a very nice red the second is getting ready to open. Oviedo_z10b_lol 199 Report post Posted October 15, 2021 Sorry for the confusion. The original pic is my A. Alexandrae throwing some color. This is my C. Macrocarpa opening its last colorless leaf. I bought it off marketplace at almost this size so I didn’t have the chance to spec for color. Still like it though.

Your palm's are playing tricks on you.
Billy 335 Report post Posted October 15, 2021 Beautiful! That alfredii looks really nice in what seems to be a pretty shady area...how's the sun exposure in that spot?

While it’s Almost doubled in height as a 30g installed about 2 years ago, it would probably like more sun. I plan on taking down the massive bamboo grove (directly to its south) behind the pool cage this winter so it’ll get more sun shortly. this was the are when I planted 2 years ago January. DoomsDave 10,056 Report post Posted October 16, 2021 @Oviedo_z10b_lol looks like you have an unusual green leafer Chambeyronia there. Out of about 30 in the ground I have one myself. Having grown hundreds from seed and small plants I’d say about2 to 5% turn out green.

Which is a bummer because I have 2 out of 7 that throw green leaves lol. 1

Billy 335 Report post Posted October 16, 2021 @Oviedo_z10b_lol @Jim in Los Altos post a photo if you can this is encouraging news! I've also heard about the massive elongated fronds on alfredii growing with less sun exposure. Good to know yours is exploding in deep shade as I was curious to see how one of mine will do down the road. I have six planted out in full sun that are all thriving and the seventh I was forced to plant under the canopy of some cunninghamianas and a big fosteriana plus gets blocked out by the neighbors 2-story house. It's been in the ground 3 months from a sun grown 15g and already gave two solid fronds pushing a huge spear and almost seems darker green now that its seeing less sun.

It’s super hard to photograph because of the crowding but that’s a B. alfredii behind the Euterpe edulis trunk. The palm was planted there as a tiny two leaf seedling about four years ago and receives no direct sun at all. Overall height is 7’ now.
