Dark Green Fronds

I planted this Trachy earlier this summer, the fronds have turned very dark green.  The Mahonia x media next to it has exhibited the same thing.  Thus is under the canopy of some big Doug firs, and was getting watered daily by a lawn sprinkler (how I water the entire garden).  

I'm assuming it's a nutrient deficiency, the soil here seems rather void of organic material.  If that's the case, I also assume it's too late in the year to apply fertilizer?

Could be mineral rich - looks healthy... dark green would normally mean healthy nutrient uptake... maybe shade also

Leaves are filled with chlorophyll! No need to apply fertilizer.
