Palm Tree Hit By Garbage Truck...help

Recommended Posts

Milk Sasquatch

Hey there. The garbage man hit the trunk of one of our very large palms while ridiculously trying to maneuver his truck on a 40 point turn in our culdesac.  A pretty deep gash has been made in the side about 1.5" deep.  What can I do to make sure this doesn't compromise the integrity of the tree or to make it less vulnerable.   Is there some kind of sealant I need to put on the exposed portion, or is it ok to leave as is?  Thanks for any help!  I love this tree and would be really bummed if anything worse happens to it.

You could probably do nothing and it would be fine. If you feel you must do something, hit the opening with some of that black tar sealer.

What type of palm is that. If it's a washie then that's just a love tap. LoL.

Monitor to see if anything oozes in the next few weeks. There is not much you can do but sealing it as suggested wouldn't hurt. If it oozes that will be a bad sign.

I would pour peroxide on the wound to help reduce the chance of any fungal growth or insect intrusion.  I do that to pruned trees.

Palms can do remarkably well even with significant trunk damage. It must have been a massive garbage truck that hit the one below. :o
