Another big Canary in London

I've been aware of this CIDP for a number of years now. It was planted really small around 2006, so 15 years or so ago. It's probably about 20 years old now. The trunk could do with smoothing down...

Lots of impressive ones out around London now...

This is almost certainly the biggest CIDP in London, planted small back in 1989...

All of these London ones were planted tiny 10-15 years ago...

London isn’t all that wet really - about 20 inches of rain per year. CIDP happily grow in parts of the Oregon coast with 3-4 times that much rain, and cooler summers. You are right that it does have a chilly, damp winter but I think the CIDP are fine with this given that it isn’t freezing. So whilst it’s often very humid, frosts in London are rare and when they do occur they are light (almost never below 25°F).

Thanks for sharing the photos. I need to take a day out in London sometime soon to visit some of these in person.

I think they're Cordylines that have never been trimmed.  Looks like they grew in the space between the fence and sidewalk.  Easy to see from the different angles on streetview.

How do they grow in london with all that rain? and isn't the winter wet and cold?

As Ryland mentioned, the London metropolis is nowhere near as wet as most people think and it is also generally fairly mild during winter and fairly warm during summer. The coldest it has got in central and eastern London since the 1980's is about -6C / 20F. Annual rainfall is below the global average as well at roughly 22 inches, although London does get quite a bit of wet-cold during winter, as you mention. The CIDP's and Washies seem to handle it fine though, strangely, which is why I am surprised that there isn't more of them growing in the PNW.

I am actually sitting on like a hundred more CIDP and Washie street view images from around London, however many have not been updated in years, so they don't look as impressive as they actually are and thus consequently I have not posted them. Take this one below for example. The most recent street view image is from 9 years ago now, way back in 2012...

It's so interesting cause the area that I live in is only a 5F degree difference on average to London, It's crazy how a small difference can make a difference! It would be really neat to see london skyline transformed by washies and CIDP! It's so interesting!

Those CDIPs look so healthy and well taken care off, there must be some real palm loving

people around. Some of the gardens look almost tiny while housing such a big palm - but

I think that is really cool! I am just wondering that those owners don't get into trouble

with their neighbors or the city's authorities while their palms are getting that big...

However, really nice documentation and thanks for all the work to post it here!

Hi Lars, the big palms growing in small London gardens definitely cause issues, whether that is with the council/authorities or new homeowners moving in. All of these London palms were planted tiny and when they grow to a big size, the unsuspecting homeowner sometimes cuts them down, or the authorities make them do it. I actually know of so many big CIDP's that have been cut down around London, many in the past 6 months or so. Probably 20 or so with at least 2-3 meters of trunk that have been cut down in 2021 alone.

September 2020

2013196509_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_37_05.thumb.png.de0ad9f5ab304a21767c458101fd10cc.png

Same spot in July 2021 - I have good word that the owner, who decided to cut it down, now regrets his decision and may plant another CIDP. Total madness and very sad.

871343064_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_37_53.thumb.png.87c25befc47a17c741468b10ca98028b.png

Here it is in the back of the shredder. Absolutely heartbreaking. Someone on the street took this photo and called the owner out on Instagram for his senseless decision.

thumbnail_image0-67.jpg.2d7e36981c7adf43694b10c88b72539a.jpg

Literally 5 minutes down the road from that one... was this one too, which had 3-4 meters of trunk... shown here in September 2020...

92892127_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_40_12.thumb.png.bb1b23177fcdf915b3d82cb7a5e31ce8.png

And again in May 2021 after it was cut down...

716364469_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_40_59.thumb.png.b706232d1cc9f0d5966f10902b9d47fc.png

Also this decent sized washie in East London, looking good on street view in 2019... at least until the new owners moved into the house...

825768713_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_44_30.thumb.png.6a781a726aebc4faef9a2c164e26c923.png

Now all that is left is an ugly stump... chainsawed off about 2-3 foot from the ground. Absolute disgrace.

158730927_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_49_16.thumb.png.e1079a168a7afaeda50439b7033816ef.png

I could show more examples of London palms that have been cut down, just in the past few months alone, but it is too depressing. There is a business venture for palm removals now in southern England, given the number of CIDP's and Washies that are appearing. I have even spotted the devils in the act on street view. This is the guy from Worthing-Brighton that has cut down several big CIDP's in that area. This one was relatively small, but the fact he has been caught in the act on street view shows how prominent palms are becoming in southern England and how frequently they must also be getting removed...

1219149264_Screenshot2021-09-17at19_02_16.thumb.png.0ee4a89bcb77a12bf84267711cded0bf.png

There are so many other London locations that have not updated on street view still, which I have not posted yet. No doubt some more have probably been cut down. Hopefully this London washie hasn't been given the chop too. I'll know when street view finally updates for it.

1871040585_Screenshot2021-09-17at18_59_03.thumb.png.ab6944c969742eb74faa3ea7d7c456cc.png

The same with this Washie in a tiny back yard in Rum Close, Wapping which is east London... just round the corner from the CIDP that I started this thread for. Hopefully it won't be cut down as it has clearly outgrown the tiny garden massively. I doubt the owner would have expected that when it was planted tiny at like 1-2 foot in height, as is the case with all the London and UK palms pretty much. They are all planted tiny and then go on to grow to big sizes. We don't really import any big ones here. That's why it is extra painful to see a big palm get cut down.

I'm just looking at the London growth rates on that Washingtonia. It's not even in the warmest part of London, certainly in terms of summer temps, but the growth on it is clearly explosive for 51N, with the first street view image from back in September 2008, showing it pretty small...

And the next most recent street view image being 2019. I seriously doubt that Washingtonia was ever protected, even just once, and it has survived the famous 2010 and 2011 winters okay and put on quite a bit of size given how far north of the equator it is...

Correct me if wrong, but these growth rates in London and southeast England may actually be on par with southern California...? Possibly due to the generous rainfall combined with generally mild winters and warm summers? I am interested to see what the people in SoCal make of this, given that we are up at 51N, compared to 33N where they are... massive difference, clearly, but growth rates seem equally explosive. Maybe 2-3 foot per year here in the most favourable places. Washingtonia is clearly a very vigorous and hardy species though. It almost appears at home in London nowadays. Washingtonia possibly has more potential here than CIDP, which is also clearly thriving over here. I haven't even covered the bigger south coast ones.

Thanks man. The palm scene is moving really quickly over here now. The CIDP's are impressive, but it is the Washingtonia's that are most surprising to me. They appear to have almost totally displaced Trachycarpus Fortunei over here now with their hardiness and quicker growth. They are popping up everywhere. All planted tiny as well, looking back on street view. Here is yet another London washie that I haven't posted yet. Street view image is 3+ years old now, so it is obviously much bigger now...

Here is a 2020 property listing photo of it... must be another 25-30 footer London one at least now, dwarfing the house. The trunk alone is almost as tall as the house.

Not forgetting these shade grown washies in London too on the Old Brompton Road...

God knows how many more washies are lurking out there, especially in back yards. Again all these were planted tiny as we just don't import big palms into England for multiple reasons. Waiting for street view to update on this London one as well, shown here back in 2019...

Here it is again last year in 2020 on a property listing site. Probably another 20-25 footer now...

image-11-1024x1024.jpg.7524ea82a0cc5ad1f31ae82a7d65a8bd.jpg

There's a big Robusta in a back yard at 53 Stirling road in Plaistow, east London. This property listing image is a few years old now, so that may well be a 30 footer by now. The trunk alone looks to be 15 foot back then in 2018 when the photo was taken...

3c7afebed26d181.jpg.064e675bcfb8a91ff16b625fd756a4c8.jpg

Another Robusta by the looks of things in a back yard at 27 Coxwell Road in Plumstead, east London. If I had to guess, there is probably a good 100 other decent back yard London washies out there, at least, probably a lot more. Most of the ones I have posted are from street view. The number is really mounting up now that I am investigating these London ones...

Falcon Way Filifera on the Isle of Dogs in East London... probably a 30 footer now as at least 3 stories tall... planted at 1 foot high in 2002.

Obviously there is the Chelsea Physic garden one as well in central London too, which I photographed in July...

These ones obviously don't compete with some of the other London washies that I have uploaded in this thread previously. It would be almost impossible to keep track of them all now without logging them on here, so I can reference them and go back to them. Again, the palm scene is moving very quickly here. You wouldn't have dreamt of this kind of stuff being in London just a decade ago, or even 5 years ago. Obviously a lot of them were hiding there in plain sight. Just a lot smaller back then.

@sipalms London averages around 1,650 hours of sunshine annually and the sunniest areas are more like 1,700 hours. Still a massive difference to LA's whopping 3,200 hours, but also 200+ hours more than your last comment suggests. Go down to the south coast of England and that figure is closer to 2,000 hours for places like Isle of Wight, Bognor Regis, Selsey, Worthing, Brighton, Hastings etc. The bad rep just comes from the winter months that are dull with very short days.

Completely missed your reply - my apologies! It is sad to see great palms are taken down. But it seems that the number of palms is increasing! :greenthumb:

I have found even more new Canaries in London. This is getting ridiculous now. There must be hundreds more lurking out there in London back yards.

Not exactly London, but the CIDP's in Penzance, Cornwall have updated. This is on the UK mainland at lat 50N in southwest England. These were planted tiny about 15-20 years ago. Unfortunately the two biggest ones haven't updated properly on street view. There is still a bit of a Beverley Hills or SoCal type effect going on though now. Just give it another decade...

These are all CIDP's on the mainland in southwest England (Cornwall, Devon). So you better watch out Los Angeles :floor2:

There is no end to the London CIDP's. Here is yet another new one in central London that has gone unnoticed all this time. I have only just discovered it today, although it was there on street view back in 2008, just way smaller. There must be at least 150-200 CIDP's in London now at this size, or bigger, which I have posted on here. It's nowhere near the biggest though. Not the healthiest looking either, but it will probably be a beast in another decade or so...

More London ones I haven't posted yet...

This one looks like it's bigger than it appears behind the wall and like it's going to become an impressive specimen soon as well.
