What in the world? Spear growing out of bottom of pot?!

Hello all,

I’ve had this s. causiarum for about a year, and after repotting it in the spring, it showed no growth aside from the spear that only partially opened as seen in the pics below. Well…. I picked up the pot today to find an entire NEW spear (or several?) growing out of the drain hole….. I’m very confused by what I’m seeing here, so if anyone could advise, I’d appreciate it! Assuming there’s no hope left for the little guy?

Looks like the palm is putting out an alternative growing point. That happens when the original growing point has been damaged or stops growing. The palm sends up a new growing point to try to save itself. Usually that point emerges from the original stem and grows upward to emerge from the pot. That happened with my original S. miamiensis when the original growing point started to die. I was crushed because I had no access to more S. miamiensis seedlings. But the palm sent up an alternative new growing point and never looked back. Your growing point got trapped or shunted downward and found a way out through the drain holes. I suggest you repot the palm and redirect the new growing point upward so it emerges from the top of the pot. Once it's headed the right direction into light it should take over photosynthesis and grow. The original growing point will gradually wither away and you'll never know the palm had a problem.

Well… that’s interesting haha.

You’re absolutely right, though! I was able to fish the new growth point up and out the side of the root ball, and it’s a whole new palm that I’ve apparently been growing subterraneously all summer. So strange - nothing happened that should have damaged the old growth point so bad, but I guess it must have been. I’ve re-planted it with this new growth point in the correct position, now.

And so I introduce you all to: IGOR! The sabal causiarum like none other! (I’ll be keeping him behind a few of my more camera-ready potted palms until he’s bounced back a bit, hahaha)

That's a first for me.

Thank you @PalmatierMeg for the explanation.

Frankenpalm....I have sen this happen a bunch of times but never an upside down

growth point like that...interesting. I have a Cyathea Brownii tree fern that had damage to the

growth point a few years back from some low 20s (F)...it sprouted another growth point but

both growth points lived and now its a 2 headed little monster.

So cool!     Not cool that your original one seems to have died, but cool that it wants to live so much that it found another way!    I had something similar to this happen to one of my D. Lutescens   When I discovered it I was like whoa!  I unpotted it and while it was not the same literal situation as yours, it was a sucker that somehow came from the bottom of the rootball and found the drain hole.   Where there's a will there's a way, and sometimes plants just have a mind of their own.    Keep us updated on how yours does. Good Luck!

Well, a week later and you wouldn’t even believe this was the same palm. It’s crazy how fast it opened up and started photosynthesizing through these leaves!

Even slow growing palms can speed up when survival is at stake. Looks great now it is headed UP.

What did you do with the original head?

I cut it off so I didn’t have it rotting beneath the soil.

@chad2468emr WELCOME TO THE CLUB!

@PalmatierMeg beat me with her advice, looks like you followed it and we should see what happens.

I've had a number of palms of various species do that to me over the years. Some kinds are a lot more prone than others. Parajube tor tor in particular seems particularly likely to do that.

Keep us apprised of your rescued palms progress. It's kind of doing a back flip, when you think about it . . . .
