Hey guys, I transplanted my Pygmy into a nicer pot from it's nursery pot to it's new pot. I removed the third very small one into it's own little pot. It had quite a few large roots when i separated it. I know they go through a sulking phase, I was wondering how long and is he doing ok, when will i see new growth?

Thanks :D

Hi, I am in Ottawa and I am curious as to whether you try to keep any palms outdoors and if you do, what part of NW Ontario do you live?

Hello, I live in Zone 3a Outside of Thunder Bay. I keep Pygmy and a Windmill outdoors as long as possible as patio plants.  I start to acclimate the Windmill when the day time temps start around 12c and bring it in at night. Pygmy Palm starts when the day time temps start around 17c. Usually after about a week and the night time temps stay above 12 c then they stay out. You being zone 5a or 5b, you can start a little earlier. Windmill Palms are very cold hardy :D

As long as no big roots were broken, you should see some progress within the next month or so. The first time i seperated pygmy dates, all 4 in the clump died. The second time i did it there was 10 palms total, i am left with 8 today (possibly 7 as one of them still shows no new growth). I did not throw these into direct sunlight immediately, it was generally morning sun after the seperation, making sure the soil was at least damp. The heat and moisture promoted a ton of new root growth, and once i began to see some frond growth i started slowly pushing them back out into the sun. They now get full sun and are growing nicely! Make sure it has heat, water, and some sunlight. Mark the spear to monitor growth. Goodluck!

Try lightly pulling on the spear. If it comes out, its probably a goner.

Thats good. Try and see if you can give it a little more sunlight during the day. Im sure the sun up that way is not as harsh as it is down here, would probably be able to handle more sun at this stage there then it would if you were down here.
