I have been very surprised at the number of palms in southern NM between this post and the other one with even more pics. They look quite healthy. Need someone to just start planting Washingtonia seeds everywhere around town, the more they pop up in random places, the more people start planting them

Because the damn things keep dying!!  Ha ha!  I’ve been looking for a larger one and I’m willing to try.  Raintree tropical owes me a palm so when I head down there I’m going to see if they have one.

I drove from Lubbock through Roswell and on to ABQ but I don’t remember seeing any palms. It’s amazing what they can grow in NM with all that Sunshine.  Kind of puts us in the PNW to shame.

Albuquerque has a few scattered around the city, you would just have to know where to look, mostly just In peoples yards. I’ve never seen one in Roswell, I think the cold windy plains winter would be too harsh but idk.

you have to go further south, they start popping up around Tularosa which is just north of Alamogordo and in Truth or Consequences which is about an hour north of Las Cruces.

I’m actually staying in the mountains in Southern New Mexico which is full of pines and an hour south of here in Alamogordo is palms, cactus and yuccas.

I took a few more pics before I came back to the mountains tonight.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had to post a few more pics. In case anyone wonders what a Sabal palm looks like in zone 8a desert climate here it is. It’s the only Sabal palm I can recall seeing in New Mexico.

I reside here in Albuquerque, and so far I have tallied up a total of 42 palms (25) trachycarpus (12)Rhapidophyllum hystrix (5) sabals, and all of them, are in people's yards, except one sabal is at a local business planted outside, and 4 windmills planted outside at a restaurant..

Welcome to Palm Talk!  Im in the Abq area as well...glad there are more and more palm people in town... i see a palm almost every day when Im driving through neighborhoods.. most are small but I do get surprised every now and then..  so way more than what you tallied!  Are you growing any?

Great stuff, I love the massive Filifera trunks you only get in a desert climate. Post up area Yucca in the Yucca thread, under the “Tropical plants-other than palms” section. I’m sure there are plenty of great ones in Alamogordo. I pass through there every time we go to the White Sands through Cloudcroft, etc.
